Pa's Caching Tales

A bunch of caching stuff

No specific topic. Just a bunch of caching stuff,

1)Sunday was a great caching day in Riverview. After the caching breakfast we headed to Riverview with cableguy to get the caches for the Sunfest event and coin. We finished early so we ended up hiking 7 kms on the on the Dobson where cableguy found a few caches and hide one. One of the finds was a cache he had signed in 2012 but had forgotten to log. The event was wonderful. A big thanks to the organizers and volunteers. A big success

2)Given the choice between caching in saint John or freddy, we usually choose Freddy. But 10 days ago we spent 3 days in saint John and had a great time. We attended their monthly breakfast; good food and caching chat.. We spent part of that day biking and caching along Spruce Lake. The second day we were brought to incredible places and views of the reversing falls from Millford and then views of the Bay from Colson Cove. We also had a nice hike and also claimed 2 earthcaches. The last day we spent the day in Rockwood Park picking up caches and getting tired with KVFalcon. Was a great trip.

3)We love some of the innovative caches in the Moncton area from gigi. She is a newbie cacher with twice as many hides as finds. Her caches often have a theme, or they are field puzzles that require a bit of thinking to get open.

4)Got an email from KDCachers last night inviting us to go caching in Parrsboro area. He decided to guide us to a cache at a waterfall in the wilderness which gave us our last D/T for the fizzy challenge. A big thank you to them. Here is the cache. Check out our logs and photos

5)I have a bunch of other stuff including our latest trip, and will add it as a comment to this post later.

  • 6)Cacherstats has the rankings of all geocachers with 200 or more finds. There are presently more than 286000 cachers on the list. Quite a coincidence with all those people that Jim52’s name is right above ours.

7)I mentioned that we went with KDCachers to get a cache for our last square on the D/T fizzy board. I didn’t mention that for a few years we only had 2 squares left to fill. Coincidentally we filled the other one about 3 weeks ago when we went out caching again with KDCachers in Saint John. So they were involved with both D/T squares that had been needing to fill for a few years.

8)While you are all preparing to hunker down for the storm, we sent the day caching in QC and ON, finishing off in Brockville with some wonderful caches along the waterfront in the Thousand Islands area. Boy the skeeters are bad here. It makes you afraid to step two feet off a trail into the woods becuase you will litterally have a hundred on you.

9)As usual we have a ton of trackables with us, and we have picked up a few more today. They will be dropped off during our travels in the USA, and we hope to pick up lots to bring home to NB

10)Over the next 5 days we hope to pick up 5 more US states to bring our total to 31.We want to add Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. The plan is to concentrate on getting those states and not on getting caching numbers. I will have to use self-ccntrol

Here is a cacher who started caching with his phone but wasnt sure how it worked, so he has 8 finds but only found 2 caches (four found for each cache). He is not registered so we cant get a hold of him to set him straight. Those using the app should be required to register. This is becoming a serious problem.

12)Did you notice that everywhere you go in NB you will find cableguy caches. A very impressive list of hides, and quality too.

  • 13) I learned something today from a log on a cache in a series we have.

I learned that if you put caches along a trail, you better put them all close to the trail. I also learned that some cachers litter. Here is the log that lead me to these conclusions.

this cache is too far off the trail, two issues; 1 far too hard to bushwhack with a bike, 2 Hawthorns everywhere I got a flat tire, cache needs new container, I left a shrine to mark my flat tube hung on a tree and empty CO2 cartridges below

    (14) Sometimes a compliment on one cache in a series is not really a compliment. Here is the log

… and that cache was perfect, odd for this series

    (15) Did a few Ohio caches today which brings our USA state total to 27. Hope to do 4 more tomorrow

    (16) We are working on getting 10 caches on every day of the calendar. Today we needed 4, but we got 13, (and drove 500 miles). Tomorrow we need 3 to bring july 6 to a total of 10 caches.

  • Thanks for saying good stuff about my caches,
Hope to get active again soon, have been very busy!
Fall and winter is better for me.

  • Nice to hear from you gigi.

If you get a chance sometime, come and join the group for one of our breakfast events at the end of each month

  • 17) Finished the 5 states we wanted to do today. As we contoured Chicago on Interstate 294, stopping every few miles to hand over $1.50 ( or more) a few times, I recalled the controversy when a .50 toll was on the TCH at Petitcodiac. During this trip, I am sure we will have paid at least $100 in tolls before we get home.

18)As we grabbed a Guard rail cache at a rest area along the Interstate, we looked over and saw a muggle with a dog eyeing us. He gave us a thumbs up. I guess he knew what we were doing.

19)We are busy dropping the TB’s that we brought with us. Today we dropped 13 of them. Still have more to drop. We are bringing home all the ones we pick up on this trip.

20)A few days ago we had a strange encounter at a cache in Quebec. It is situated at a small gazebo in a spot where a bike trail crosses a road. We had driven up to this cache in the past and had also tried it when biking the trail. This time when we drove up, there was a couple of bikers behind the gazebo looking for something. We figured they were cachers looking for the cache. Turns out we were half right. They were looking for the cache but they were not cachers.

They did not own a gps, had never used one, had never been to the website, but they knew there were caches on the trail and often looked for them when biking. The gentleman actually knew where the cache was located, and helped us find it. I then had to show him my gps and explain to him how to use it.

  • (21)Shediac has a cache at the giant lobster. Ashtabula OH has a cache at the giant rocking chair.

(22)Tomorrow we hope to do some hiking on the Western reserve greenway Geotrail in Ashtabula. There are more than 150 caches on the 26 mile trail and a coin is available for finding 2 caches on every mile. Not sure if we can do it. There is a beautiful official pamphlet, map and passport issued by the county. Here is a copy http://www.visitashtabulacounty.com/geo.pdf

Here is one of the caches http://coord.info/GC53WT5

(23)We found it interesting that some of the rest stops on interstate 81 in NY are now called TEXT STOP and the highway signs sometimes say IT CAN WAIT / 5 MILES TO TEXT STOP.

    (24) Last night we were in LA PORTE Indiana. Of course nobody speaks French. We were a little confused with the times for meals, etc at the hotel. We were basing everything on the Eastern Time Zone, but it turns out that a small strip of Indiana near Chicago Illinois is in the Central Time zone. I was told that I could drive 15 minutes down the road and the time would change

(25)Been hot around here with temperatures over 30.
