Caching and Hiking

Summer is getting close and a lot of cachers seem to be in a hiking/caching mood. There are many local examples including the Dobson hike last weekend organized by globuf and chatelaine, and the Hayward Pinnacle event organized by evulc and superwife for this Sunday.

Another example is the Womb of the Woods activity in the past few weeks. There was a good hike to get to the cache and many of us went more than once. (An Ottawa cacher says he wouldnt have gone for it because he doesnt like nanos in the woods. I think he missed the point)

On a personal note, Ma and I have been doing quite a bit of hiking/caching lately.

We had two trips with Belladan to do Styk’s series on the rail to trails from Petit to Havelock, and we did some rails to trails down off Pine Glen Road and did the hikes in Fundy Park to get the new caches there.

On Monday I went with Belladan to get some caches on the trails in the Fundy Wilderness area near Adairs Wilderness Lodge and do some maintenance on our ANT series of caches. Challenging hiking but really worthwhile. Last Thursday I spent 7 hours hiking a 12 km loop doing trail maintenance on the Fundy Footpath near Martin Head. I claimed an earthcache and did maintenance on our 2 caches on the trail.

While on this topic, I thought some of you might be interested in the following.

    Sussex Celebrates NATURE

Paul Gaudet of Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts Club has all the details about this interesting event for this Saturday

http://monctonoutdoorenthusiasts.wordpress.com/

You will note that there are organized hikes to spectacular places where there happen to be some caches.

I was at Adairs Lodge on Monday and Ida mentioned the event and that they would be participating. She said they would be having some activities at the Lodge in the afternoon and would love to have someone on hand to explain geocaching. I am not available but told her I would contact some local cachers. If interested let Ida know.

    Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts Club

I glanced at the Club schedule of events for this summer and they have some really interesting up coming hikes. The club website presently has the list for June and will add the rest later. Again many of the hikes will be to areas many of you have not visited and there could be caches. Be aware however that the late cacher Ecanuck warned that the Club was always in a hurry, and may not wait long for cachers.

  • Didi and I will certainly hit the trails with the kids on Saturday. Just a matter of picking up where and if we bring the gps 🙂

  • And the nice thing is that you dont have to go far because kids just love to get out, no matter where it is.

For those thinking of going to the Sussex event on Saturday, we recommend hiking on the Bluffs. There are only 4 caches but the views from up there are incredible. The trail goes along the Bluff and you look down on the Dutch valley farm country and across to the hills on the other side, including Poley Mountain. I recall being up there once and watching an eagle gliding by below.

For something a bit more remote there will be the hike to Quiddy Falls (also known as Wallace Falls) and the one to Friars Nose

  • I just noticed the following on The Outdoor Enthusiasts website

■Dobson Trail Celebrates International Trail Days Saturday June 2nd 2012…

■There are two Dobson Trail events celebrating International Trail Days.

■We are partnering with the Town of Riverview to lead a hike from the Prosser Brook Road to Hayward Pinnacle (9km), the highest point in the South East Region. Please bring water, snacks, and appropriate footwear and attire for this wilderness trail. Transportation from Byron Dobson Arena to the trail head will be provided by the Town of Riverview at 9 a.m. Contact Jill to reserve a place at 387-2133.

■The second event will be an information kiosk and BBQ at the Dobson Trail Parking Lot on Pine Glen Road, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.

  • Pa, the bluff hike sounds very very interesting. And we could get some caches instead of going on a trail where we found all the caches already. How long of a hike do you think it is? Our 2yrs old could walk a bit, but then I’ll have to carry her on my back in a carrier. Didi would carry our 7months with a front carrier. Do we need to register or something?

  • You can go on the bluffs by yourself anytime. Parking is at the water tower off 111 at the end of rockridge drive. The satelite map clearly shows the water tower. The trail starts along the fence on the right side of the tower.

Here is a warning LOL. Many many years ago we hiked that trail with our daughter and her family. George had Jake in a carrier on his back. Going under a branch, George forgot about Jake and didnt bend down low enough. Jake didnt appreciate the bump on the head.

  • Nemo if you go to Sussex, it would be worthwhile after to go all the way to Adairs wilderness lodge, out past Poley Mountain…Here is a cache across the road from the lodge..

It is a wonderful place and the hospitality and the pie are incredible

  • Tracker and Greybeast now have 369 caches along the hiking/biking trail stretching from Bathurst all the way to Shippegan. Quite a feat. I’ve done a number of caches by both and they are always great containers and bang-on coordinates. I am up to that region of the province frequently to visit family, so if anyone who wants to tackle that trail in sections, let me know, and if I am in the area I would certainly be willing to go out and park a vehicle at another end of the trail to walk to.
