Pa's Caching Tales

Caching Way of Life . December

As you know, we are retired; so geocaching is a big part of our life.

I got a new Garmin 62S on sale from GPS Central and Belladan got one on sale from GpsCity. Good prices. Dan came over and we played around with maps. I have been out caching with mine a few times and done a lot of learning and a lot of swearing. I do not know what Dan has learned, but I may find out today. He will pick us up shortly and we will go and try Critter’s new caches in Sackville. It should be a challenge, as usual

Speaking of Belladan, he has 11 new caches on a trail in the Bouctouche area. It is a short drive from our place, so we have done them all. Rather than do them all at one time, we went 5 different days and picked up a couple each time. Each time we did a return trip on the entire trail and got a nice 4 kms walk. This also allowed us to continue our streak which is at 260 days.

Here is a map

After our morning caching today, we hope to go to the Casino for the $6.99 buffet and meet up maybe with Jim52 and Tharitiz. Maybe we will win a bit more. We are now at $768.

We have played with GSAK and improved our use of it, using hints and info we got from Jim and Tiger Tracker. We will soon be entering caches for Ottawa and for our trip south later this month. MA has over 100 puzzles solved in the Ottawa area. We hope to grab a bunch when there at Christmas time. On our way to Ottawa, we are planning to stop in Freddy for the caching breakfast at Jungle Jim’s, and pick up some caches each day to continue our streak..

If anyone needs small baggies for micros either for your own caches or as a maintenance kit, you can perhaps check with Belladan. He bought a very large quantity, and we bought some from him. They come in small packages with 100 baggies in each.

  • We did the three Critter caches this morning. Certainly met our expectations. These three were worthy additions to his series of incredible caches in the area.

We then went to get a cache near Salisbuty. We also checked on a cache that we had claimed on one of our runs in the area in November 2010. We could not recall the cache, so we checked the log sheet and could not find our names. Either we forgot to sign or we logged it in error. In any event, we have now signed the log book and added a note to the cache page.

OOPS Casino lunch buffet on Mondays is $4.99. Certainly worth the price. We cached in our winnings and we have now won $793. These winnings all come from the free coupons that they give us as seniors. We likely have put more than twice that amount in coupons in the machines, so if we were using our own money, we would be behind.

  • None of my business PA but if you plan to spend Christmas time in Ottawa I say you should leave tommorow. I remember a story when you needed over 20 days to get there. You only have 13 days left, there is nothing like having to rush yourselves. Sorry, I couldn’t resist 😉

  • Well denislan we think we should be taking 2 or 3 days to get to Ottawa. The weather and the caches will influence the length of the trip. **************************************************

Congrats to Jim52 who just passed 15 000.

Jim is certainly not slowing down and the cold weather is not going to stop him. 4 days ago he travelled to Oromocto area with KDCacher and they put a boat in the water and grabbed the 12 caches on Evil Island. Yesterday he headed to PEI, planning to bike to a large number of caches on the CT. Jim is currently working on getting caches for the winter challenge.

If you see the name globuf on a cache, it is Gloria, a friend of ours. Gloria was on our two last trip to UK. After coming back from UK in September, she has been doing some serious caching. Over 200 caches in just over 2 months.

She certainly seems addicted, it appears that nothing will stop her.

Here is her log on Ron’s cache that is in the water just out of reach of land:

Well today I had the rubber boots…. right foot went through ice and water over the boot (wow that water is cold)… signed log and and hightailed for home…. thanks for the challenge…. someone is attempting to build a bridge of birch trees to get to the cache…

She also went for Argus ‘s caches at irishtown Park. Because of flooding and shaky bridges, and mud, these caches should not be attempted from Tankville school. I guess nobody told globuf:

    Here are two logs:

Oh my soul ! left Tankville school area en route to this cache…. interesting adventure however was determined to get to it….. I certainly did not look as clean as the Cooker who was on her lunch hour and caching….had fun with the rubber boots today…

met one of the Cookers, pleasant lady who drove me back to my car instead of my trudging through the mud and ice to get to ‘Enchanted’ cache. It was great chatting with another cacher…

And here is a Cooker log

A bit of lunch hour caching on this beautiful sunny day. Everything is pretty frozen so not too messy. Met up with Globuf, she was coming from the other way. Chatted all the way back to the car. It’s nice to meet up with another cacher. She found this one. TFTC

Of course you all know that it is common for Mrs Cooker to cache on lunch hour.

Yesterday (Tuesday) was a zero calendar day for us, so we had to grab a cache to fill the day and also continue our streak. We got 5 caches in the Sacville/Amherst area because we actually are working on having at least 2 caches for each calendar day. Today is also a zero day so we are heading for a day of caching and hiking around Oromocto. After that we still have 2 more zero days this month and 3 days with only 1 cache.

  • It is December 15. If you go and check Jim52’s stats early enough, you will see a zero on his calendar for today. It is the only zero on his calendar. I am sure that the zero will be gone by the end of the day. Jim could have filled that date last year but he confused the dates and missed it. And of course Jim doesnt cheat, so that date has stayed blank all year.

    • I also noticed that Jim52 nailed 15k caches earlier this month, such a huge accomplishement, I’m not even sure I will get near that someday haha. Having filled every calendar dates is another insane accomplishement. Kuddos to you.

        • I got 1000 finds earlier this year and it was really special for me. I wanted Marie to be with me and I timed it so it happened at an event. Funny, one of the cachers in Bathurst did the same so we were two sharing 1k finds at the same time :).
