I am not sure about the rest of you but I like to look at the logs on caches sometimes not just my own but others as well. If I see a listing that looks cool or one I plan on finding later I like to read what people are saying. One thing I noticed lately is the number of duplicate found logs or DNF logs but they say in the log they found it or vice versa saying they didn’t find it but logged it as a find. I have seen people log a note instead of a find as well. If someone logs a DNF on a cache they actually found then it will still show up as a not found cache on the map or in a PQ or if they DNF by mistake it could make the owner or others think it is missing. I realize that we all look at our stats and most of us want them to be as accurate as possible but where does being polite and helpful stop, and being anal and nosey start?

I myself went nuts trying to find a duplicate once and I wish someone would have told me if they had noticed but I also can see someone getting upset at being corrected. I think it is all in the “how and who” is telling you. I have not told anyone about a mistake except for a close friend or if someone mis-logged one of mine. Someone else’s numbers don’t matter much to me but if a gentle email to them would make their numbers more accurate, one way or another do you think it is appropriate to tell them? Not all owners care or notice the logs on their own caches and not all finders care or even know if their numbers are right I guess.

I know what to do if it is my cache but what if you notice it on someone elses’s? Would you want to be corrected?

Personally, I would like to be told if I double entered or made the error.
On my caches, if someone logs a DNF, I will send them a quick email thanking them and maybe getting some more info before I head out to replace it.
But I only have 8 hides, so it is easy - I can only imagine those cachers that have 100-200 hides... I can't imagine they get a notification for every log - that would be a never ending battle just to read them!

If I see a dupe found log, I delete one of them right away. I don't email the person about it as I assume it was just an oversight.

I think for me, it depends on the situation. If it was someone I know, I would probably email them. For newbies, I might email them and let them know that they made a minor mistake.

I have seen found logs on multis where someone found the first point and none of the rest and kind of wondered if I should email them or not.

I recently had a person post a DNF on one of my caches and a Needs Archiving on another but the text in the log indicated that they had found both caches. I sent an E-Mail to that person and it turnout that they were logging their finds on their phones while at the cache and had simply chosen the wrong option by mistake. They corrected their logs and all was fine.

I think that you hit the nail on the head with the "how and who" comment. We have a cacher who the locals call the cache cop - sometimes this cachers comments come across the wrong way. This person is well meaning but can come across as a busy body.

I have over 200 cache placements and read every log. If someone logs one twice (last weekend a cacher with 20,000 finds logged two of mine twice and I sent a joking note "so THAT is how you found so many, LOL"

I would want to know - I've done it, we probably all have. I've also accidentally put a happy face on a DNF and was happy to learn the mistake and fix it. I think choosing your words carefully and checking your tone will help the person see that you are a well meaning mentor and not a nosy busybody. :)

I have seen this on other peoples caches before while looking through the logs, usually by new cachers. I am not sure if the cache owner noticed it. On a few occasions I have sent an e-mail to the cacher to explain their error. After all, they are new and still have a lot to learn.
So far all the cachers I contacted thanked me for helping them.
Look at it this way. If you were talking to a new cacher about caching and they said something that was wrong, wouldn't you point out the mistake to them. Not to correct them but help them out. Yes you would.
So doing it by e-mail is the same thing. Of course, not as an attack but as a friendly gesture.
And before anyone writes that this is sticking your nose in someone elses business, it isn't. No one can learn if there is no one to teach them.

Yes, I'd like to be told....and learn from it. And I'd have no problem with pointing it out.
And it's fairly easy to notice the dupe logs, when I get the emails on my caches. A hundred hides, but only a few emails per day.

I would appreciate it if a cache owner would send me an email to correct one of my log. I usually log the caches I found during the day once I get home and mistakes can happen when you are tired.

When I first started geocaching, I was fortunate enough that on the very first day I went out, I was introduced to travel bugs. The first bug I ever found was (TB1F65Q) and it was in a stump not too far from Salisbury, NB. It wasn’t long after that when I learned about geocoins and started to see them pop up from cache to cache.

As time has progressed, I’ve seen my share of geocoins out in the wild. I’ve also managed to collect my own fair share of them. I haven’t collected anywhere near as many as some have but between the coins given out for challenges, unique event coins, and other coins I have wanted to pick up, I’ve probably collected 20-30 so far. A small collection indeed but still something I would not have had otherwise had I not been into geocaching.

Geocoins come in many a different size and shape. The most common shape for a coin is the typical round type coin we have all seen. But outside of that, I’ve seen coins shaped like guitars, sharks, triangles, and a slough of other forms that inspire the imagination to wonder what made the designer come up with such a unique idea for a coin.

Some coins are better than others. Some coins are just downright butt ugly while others can almost take your breath away at how incredibly detailed they can be. I’ve seen some coins that incorporate three dimensional shapes and are quite large and upon looking at them, you’re not sure if it’s a coin, or some sort of archaic steam-punk key that powers a time machine made by HG Wells.

Whatever you may think, geocaching may have brought us to the outdoors, but it’s also brought out a bit of a collector in some of us. Many folks amass a huge collection of geocoins and that becomes their biggest focus. If they can’t have the coin themselves, they “discover” coins at events or out in the wild. Writing down trackable codes, snapping photos, or getting pages of coin codes so they can discover them and have them added to their list of coins they’ve seen. There are entire events that are purely about geocoins and sharing them, talking about them, trading, and even selling them. It’s almost an entire sub-hobby spun out of the geocaching genre.

Then we have the long debated topic of whether or not geocoins should be released into the wild. Much like endangered species in a zoo, many folks fear launching their coins out into actual caches for fears that the coin may go missing. Unfortunately, between coin thieves, and new cachers who don’t know what a trackable is and mistake it for swag, geocoins have been known to disappear once they enter a cache. They hop around for awhile but for many folks, they see their coins “stuck” in a cache only to find out that the coin really isn’t there at all because someone has taken it. This has lead to an entire business around proxy coins which allow the coin to be sent into the wild without the owner losing it.

For me, I continue to pick up event coins, and regional challenge coins from time to time. If I happen to see one I think is really cool, I might pick it up and add it to my collection. I don’t bother releasing them because for me, I want to keep the coin so I can enjoy the artwork and the unique aspect that is geocoins.

How about you? What kinds of cool coins have you seen? Do you have your own collection? Should coins stay put or move in the wild? What’s your opinion?

I have 27 trackable coins, 15 are activated in my possession and 1 still moving (I think) and one is missing in NS, the trackable bottomless pit. I have 10 unactivated, for no reason just didn't bother. I own 6 untrackable coins and 7 pathtags. I have lost at least 3 coins while showing them to groups of kids at teaching events, just gone missing and won't do that again. I have a coin from www.geocoins.ca which I never bothered with. I only buy coins that I earned at events or contest, otherwise they are just things I move. I never discover coins, don't see the point?

Just a new cacher, and love the artwork of coins of any shape, my thoughts are to keep them moving so other cachers can enjoy their beauty as well, and experience the magic of finding the the coins and moving them along.
The only drawback to this , is that not everyone logs coins properly, and many go missing which is a shame.
Just my thoughts :)

We dont consider ourselves as coin collectors but we eventually ended up with a ton of them. We earned some at events, wond some in draws, had some given to us and we purchased a number in support of local geocachng events.

We sent one of coins travelling and it only lasted 3 caches before disappearing, so we are keeping the rest.

We grab every coin and TB we see in caches and at events and help them travel. If a TB hostel says to only take as many as you leave, we ignre that and take many of them.

We never discover them. I understand people discovering them at events but I cant figure out why some cachers discover coins in caches rather than grab them.

I said it many many many times before, as starships are meant to fly (I have never in my life heard a stupid-er song, ever), geocoins are meant to travel. If everyone would keep them in their collections, it would suck as we would never have the pleasure of finding one in a geocache. They do not have a trackable number so to sit in a display box. My two useless cents :)

I was walking down a trail with Jim52 a couple of weeks ago, and he was reminiscing about how caching and the local community has evolved. And not just the cachers have evolved, but the caches themselves as well. More and more I find myself pouring water out and repairing containers. There is a ton of soaked log books and tons of geojunk in the containers. Old moldy swag, dated calling cards, lots of mould. Caches placed by cachers that have stepped away from the sport. I don’t mind doing the maintenance when it’s a great location, a clever multi, or a creative cache that took a lot of though, planning, and work.

But after a dozen years of containers in the woods and many cachers who have come and gone, there is a lot of geojunk out there. Maybe we could list here the caches and series that either need maintenance, or should be removed altogether. Yes, we log Maintenance logs and Archive requests, but there is no public record of caches that we should just avoid. Case in point is the “Glow” caches that army.of.two wanted to do. I’m glad that this cache was talked about in the Chat window. Perfect, I now know to stay away from that one.

I for one, would like to know which caches and series to avoid. Also, I’m sure that some cache hiders would like a reminder of which hides need a little TLC (some couldn’t care less). Maybe a little CICO (Cache In Cache out) is in order.

Don’t hold back, I feel that it’s time to do a good cleanup and free up some space.

This has come up so many times before and many people are afraid to speak up because they don't want to offend someone or they don't want to look like a know it all complainer. I have mentioned names in the past and will in the future, I am not calling that person, evil, stupid or any other demeaning or offensive thing all I am saying is this person is not maintaining their caches due to various reasons. That is not a slight on that person other than they are not being responsible with their caches, they may be good people. We all know the half dozen around here causing the problems and those people are making no effort to fix it so as responsible cachers we have the right and obligation to do something about it when we find something that is no longer a geocache. The way I see it is if I was bringing out someone for the first time would not want them to find a cache that is broken, moldy, rotten, missing firetacks, in a poor location or any other reason to be embarrassed with the find. I am responsible for dozens of archivals because the owner won't do it themselves and will continue to do so as long as it is necessary. The problem is cacher that put out dozens or hundreds and up and quits and the awesome slew of one hit wonders that keep getting hides approved with little or no experience.

Agreed, Rev. At this point, I'm not looking to point fingers, you're right, we know the usual suspects. But'd I'd like to see here a list we could compile of active caches that we should avoid for one reason or another.
And I know that your heart is where the heart of most cachers is. It's not about singling people out, it's about having a province full of quality caches. I hope folks will understand that.

I'll have no trouble with pointing out those caches....when I spot one soon enough.

I have been one of those guys, I admit it...I was hiding a bunch of cache and not taking responsibilty for it. I stopped caching since 2008. I plan to go check the archived cache I have and remove them from the woods as soon as I can. I have decided to start geo caching again and this time mt cache will be close to home and I don't plan to have more than 5 active cache and I will be sure to take good care of them. Me and Rev-Slippery have talked a bit and he made a few comment of my inexperience in caching when I started and I took the critic from him instead of beating the shit out of him ahahahaha. Just kidding Ken! But seriously if anymone needs tips on geocaching become friend with Rev_Slippery, this guy is very dedicated to geocaching, a good person to have feedback from.

PS* Sunday me and my wife are going to hide a 5 caches serie close to home and I am very excited about having a few out there.

My problem with this is that there is no definition of who DESERVES IT. It it the number of caches in trouble? Is there a group decision on singling people out? What if the person pointing fingers is not as bright as Rev and starts singling out people who dont deserve it.

BTW I know (or at least I hope) people are not singling us out. We have a ton of caches out there and do our best to do maintenance. (We checked on 5 this week). A lot of our caches have been out a long time and therefore many of those do not get logged often. When they do get logged and there is a problem, we do our best to get out to it. But other caching tasks could have a priority.

Anyhow, I really do not like to snglle people out, at least not in print.

Pa, we have had this discussion before and I know how you feel, I feel differently although I won't talk about someone personally but only if they have multiple caches that need to be removed not just archived and left there. If they want to come on here and call me on it they can but they made their bed with their actions or in-actions and they must lie in it. I have made my own bookmark list of caches that should be archived as the owners are not doing anything about their old caches that need to be cleaned up. I check it every once and a while to see if anything has been done to any of them.

Maybe we could set up a public book mark list of caches that are not going to be removed anytime soon and then we could make an effort to removes caches that need to be removed. This would help to keep the trash out of the woods and the owners can either do maintenance or let the rest of us clean it up. If one of my caches ends up on the list so be it but most of us know who is responsible and who isn't. If we all work together than it would make things easier and be a deterrent to some to not end up on the list. When you hide a cache you agree to terms and conditions which includes maintenance but many of the problem caches are from people who don't cache at all anymore and many of the newer cachers have no idea who these people even are. I won't mention the names :)

I disagree with removing caches that do not belong to me as I feel that this is the job of the reviewer. We do however monitor the caches here on the Miramichi that belong to cachers who have not been active for quite a while.

Since we started caching we have systematically visited the caches and placed maintenance logs on those needing work. We also monitor the ones which we (and others) have been unable to find by requesting a check by the owner in a maintenace log as a warning to visitors that there could be problems. We also email the owners for confirmation that the cache is still present.

In one recent incident we were going to Escuminac and we read about a cache that others said was washed away in a flood. There was numerious DNF's over a substantial period of time as well so we checked the owner activity and that particular geocacher had not logged on since 2008. We obviously skipped that cache and posted a needs achieving log stating the details to the reviewer. Within two days the cache was diabled.

I know there have been some lively discussions on the use of maintenance logs but posting one of these logs is always our first step in dealing with delinquent cache owners. An obvious pattern of neglect has always been picked up by the reviewers in our area and quite a few caches have been archieved in the last year. When we take the time to post an honest log (& a maintenace one if it is required) then 'bad caches' will no longer exist.

The reality is, it depends on where you are and what you are comfortable with.

I think the biggest issue that's being discussed here, and has been discussed MANY times before, is the fact that there is a considerable amount of caches out there that have NM logs on them, or are just plain garbage, and the owners do nothing about them. They ignore the logs and ignore the emails, and the geo-trash sits in the woods and nothing is done about it.

If someone puts an NM log on one of mine, I try and get out as soon as I can. But like CG said, many have come and gone and their caches remain and need to be removed because they are just piles of garbage sitting in the woods.

Something else that should be noted is that the "obvious pattern of neglect" is definitely NOT always picked up by the reviewers, at least in some areas anyway. An NM log is only flagged to the owner, not the local reviewer, so the reviewer has no idea if a cache has received an NM log or not.

And to be perfectly blunt, there have been caches in the Moncton area that have been missing for 1+ YEARS with multiple NM logs on them and they still sat there. A few of them had messages from reviewers warning them that their cache would be archived but then months would go by and nothing. It wasn't until someone tagged them as NA that they actually got archived.

Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the reviewers. They do what they can when they have time but it really shouldn't fall to them to take care of what the CO's should be doing. If the CO's won't do what needs done then the locals need to take action, and that's kind of what we've been seeing lately. People for a long time were scared of logging an NA on a cache because they didn't want to offend anyone, but people are now starting to get the fact that if a cache needs to be archived, GET IT ARCHIVED! Don't let it sit around and rot and make things worse.

If a cache owner gets mad because someone tagged their cache as garbage or missing and that cache owner has not done the necessary maintenance or has ignored emails, then it's their own fault for being in that situation and they really have no right to get mad about it. If the owner was doing what they were supposed to, and taking care of their caches accordingly, their caches would not be tagged as NA, or need removed. They may not like being called out in that regard but if their caches are garbage, they need to do something about it. That's the plain and simple truth.

I should also add that this actually sort of happened to me when I started caching. I hid a cache in an AWFUL location and another local cacher called me out on it. I didn't know him at the time, and really, I wasn't too happy about it, but he was absolutely right, so I moved my cache and it was FAR better than it was before. I may not have liked it but he was right.

If the cache itself had been complete garbage and someone had removed it and said that the cache needed archived because of the lack of maintenance (had that been an issue), I would not have been happy about it, but it would be my fault for letting it get to that point.

I have always felt that if you can't maintain the caches you have, then you should give them up for adoption or archive them. I know that other cachers help with maintenance, but it should never be expected. That's the biggest reason why I archived my Story Teller series. Too many caches with crappy containers that I just didn't have time to maintain. I archived all 101 of those caches and I feel a LOT better knowing that they aren't out there anymore.

The reviewers do not remove garbage from the woods! They can archive a cache but if the person is not caching anymore I think we should be proactive and remove it if it needs to be removed and then let the reviewer archive it. Leaving it there is not the answer. Like Zor says the reviewers DO NOT see needs maintenance logs so they don't know about problems until it gets a needs archived log.

I don't think anyone's talking about anyone in particular (though there are several cachers who have retired or moved away from Moncton), but quit calling yourself handsome, Paul!

And I 110% agree that we should just remove the junk, then post a NA note. I'm glad that quite a bit of that has been going on here lately.

And I want to add that maybe this a good time to have this conversation again, as the community has many 'newer' cachers who have not been in on the previous chatter ;).

I don't personally see a problem with other people removing inactive caches as long as great discretion is used in doing so. I wouldn't consider 2 or 3 DNFs or a single maintenance log as grounds for removal, but if a cache has literally been a problem for a year or more and cacher after cacher points it out in the logs, I'd say it's out of the CO's hands. I would say however if someone does decide to remove a cache that has yet to be archived but is deserving, leave a note saying you did so.

If the cache is trash and the cache owner is no longer active, it's gone. Simple as that to me. I have been caching almost 2 1/2 years so I know who is active and who isn't. Unless the cache is in a really nice spot to bring people to, I have no problem removing something I know will be archived and left in the woods. Maybe if it is a really old cache with some history I may fix it up. I won't have it archived just to place another in the same spot.
But I will not leave something that will get archived by the next cacher to find it because I was too lazy to take it or afraid to hurt another cachers feelings. If they are no longer active in the game they are no longer a cacher, and their geojunk is mine for the taking.
I found it, I logged it, I took it.
There are a few times when I have retrieved caches that I had already found, just because they got archived and the junk was left behind. The CO was not going to get it and neither was anyone else. So I did my own cito for my own reasons. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or does. This is how I do things.

Cableguy1, I've done that a few times for caches in Bathurst. There was one cache in particular that still hadn't had maintenance done a full year after I found it, so I returned, removed the cache, and posted a "needs archiving" log. I did my research before doing this and found the owner hadn't logged a find in over two years. A day later, the cache was archived (not removed), with a note saying "I don't live in the area anymore so I'm not doing maintenance". Now, when I find caches by this person and they are in rough shape, I remove them. I won't apologize for doing so.

When we learned in January of 2011 that our daughter and her fiancé had decided to get married in Jamaica Terry and I faced a bit of a dilemma; neither one of us had any desire to go south. We’re both fair-skinned, blue-eyed and hate the heat. We both burn badly, one of us gets hives that itch like crazy and one of us gets grumpy. The thought of spending a week on the beach in the tropics was truly not all that appealing to us but we couldn’t not go. There was no question about that. So, we starting researching and learning about Jamaica, checked out the caches all over the island (all 22 of them!) and started making our plans.

We’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, which means everything is included; the room, all meals including room service, all drinks all day and night and all the entertainment and some water sports. Which is wonderful if all you want to do is eat, drink, sunbathe and drink and eat some more. The resort is beautiful, the beach and water are amazing, the food is great, the drinks are good and the service is excellent. But when you stay in an all-inclusive you see the Jamaica they want you to see and it sure isn’t the real Jamaica. All you see is the beach and the resort unless you take an excursion to one of the tourist attractions.

We got the name of a driver/guide from Moshera, a cacher from St. Stephen who had used his services a year ago, and made plans to have 2 days of caching while we were here. Boy, are we ever glad we did!

Phillip picked us up at 8:30 am for our first day of caching. Montego Bay, where we’re staying, is on the northern side of the island so we headed east, toward Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls. If you’ve never driven on the left hand side of the road before, it is an experience! And in Jamaica they’re crazy. The highway we’re on is a divided 4-lane with a speed limit of 80 kph, which very few adhere to. Phillip is weaving in and out of traffic as buses, taxis and cars stop in the outside lane to pick up passengers. There are goats eating at the roads edge, with one occasionally venturing too far into the traffic. We speed by home after home made of cinder blocks, most just half completed with rebar poking high in the air, waiting for their second floors to be added. Phillip informs us that people build until they run out of money, then live there and add on as funds are available, adding metal sheeting or plywood to cover empty windows and doorways. Others are completed and painted every shade of the pastel rainbow. There are people everywhere along the highways; workers waiting for rides into town, vendors hawking their wares, old women tending fires, school children in their coloured uniforms, men gathering and talking in the shade. It’s obvious that Jamaica is a very poor country, yet you don’t get a sense of hopelessness or defeat. People do what they need to do to survive and get on with life.

Dunn’s River Falls is one of the top tourist attractions in Jamaica and it’s not hard to see why. The falls are beautiful. They’re about 900 feet in height and you climb from the gorgeous beach at the bottom all the way up to the top. The water cascades down over numerous small steps and has many pools where you can swim or sit under the falls. Unfortunately, you are herded up the falls at a fairly quick pace so do not get to spend much time exploring or truly enjoying them, which is a shame. It also takes a bit of time to get used to the aggressiveness of the vendors here in Jamaica. In most places you are jumped on the second you enter and can be hounded until you buy or leave. It’s a bit disconcerting at first, but once you realize it’s their way of life and how they survive it’s a bit easier to deal with. The market at the top of the falls is notorious for this so we rushed through it, stating we had no money on us, which was true. None the less, Dunn’s River Falls is definitely a must see (or do) when in Jamaica, doubly so since there is an amazing Earthcache GC18WG8 there.

We stopped for a lunch of jerk chicken with rice and peas, traditional Jamaican fare, at a roadside eatery Phillip recommended. It was fairly large for a roadside cafe but we were happy to see local businessmen amongst the customers. It was a bit surreal to wait for our meal and watch the men and women in the kitchen working, mainly in conditions that would not be allowed here in Canada. The place was very clean but the food, like in most places, was cooked over a wood-burning fire. Indoors! We watched the men add wood and stir the embers way back in the kitchen while the women prepared and served the food up front. The food was spicy but good!

After lunch, we headed back toward Montego Bay to see some sights and pick up the other 7 or 8 caches along the way. All of the caches in Jamaica have been hidden by folks who are visiting but they all have a local who will look after maintenance, etc. Many are in places that bring a little extra business their way so they are more than willing to be cache guardians. We stopped at a beautiful small private villa, Sea Rose Villa, for a cache GC3A2B and at a beautiful little beach near another cache, Over the Wall GC1P813 .

Jacob Taylor Beach is small and gorgeous but empty except for some local fishing boats and a few shacks where vendors sell their crafts. Phillip mentioned that the beach used to be very busy and popular, before the all-inclusive resorts were built. He, and everyone we spoke to, was very careful not to criticize the tourist industry because without it Jamaica would be devastated but it was now obvious to us that some of that industry also hurt the locals and their small businesses. It’s a catch 22 because these big international companies come in and build these palatial resorts that bring in thousands of visitors and employ thousands of Jamaicans but whose very existence keeps those visitors inside the resorts’ walls, not out spending money in the local economy. I guess it’s just like everywhere else; the rich get richer at the expense of the poor.

One of our favourite caches and probably the most unique we found was “RastaMon” GC2GQZ9 , a living carved tree at the entrance to a private villa, with the cache hidden in his “hair”. We finished the day off with a few more caches, most of them hidden at or near resorts that took us into Montego Bay and around the downtown area. We cringed at the people wandering in the middle of the busy four-lane streets selling newspapers, nuts, sugar cane and other stuff while cars zoomed by. It’s amazing we didn’t see any accidents but Phillip said they do happen regularly. I can see why.

Our final cache of the day was Mo Bay Cruisers GC3E27R near one of the ports the cruise ships dock at and we were FTF on it. How cool is that? We had read the cache page when we noticed a new one had been published a couple of weeks ago so knew to take a hanger with us as you definitely needed some help getting the container out. Our driver, Phillip, was determined that we would get the FTF once he knew what it meant. I think he was more excited about it than we were! A great way to end our first day of caching.

That's awesome. I stayed at the same resort as Milosheart, close to the same time. Months before, I was wondering if I would have the time to find a cache in Jamaica, as I would be there only for a few work-related days. Just weeks before my arrival, someone placed a cache AT OUR RESORT! How convenient. Also got the one at Sangster airport.
We should all be envious of that trip around the island, what an amazing way to visit it.

After 4 months of caching, 113 registered players (12 of whom didn’t submit any tasks), 1574 tasks approved, over 412 caches hidden, 28 events held around the province, lots of fun and laughs…..the results are in.

The 4 highest scores in the 2011-2012 Come Out & Play Contest were from WackyJack, team-newfie-trio, moshera and Ranger170. The 3 lowest scores were from Freedom Five, Coopsquared and geodimeter. LeBlancCoates won the prize for “Closest to Average” and K57 won the draw among those who finished with a “zero” score. Congratulations to all!

We’d like to offer a huge thank you to Zor and and his hampsters at Cache Up NB for, again, hosting us and creating the program(s) that enables us to use the site for registering, submitting claims, etc. It is soooo much appreciated! We look forward to working with you to make it even easier next year!!

Much thanks to Milosheart, I can't begin to imagine how much work went into this contest. Thank you for kick starting my 2012 year, thanks to you, I started the year stronger than ever, the finds came fast and early. Hiding was fun too. Thanx again, and congrats to all the winners!

Amazing results really, super number of entrants, but to have 69 of the 113 complete all 20 tasks is great and so many more with more than 10. Congrats to everyone for the efforts on both sides

Awesome! Any chance of sharing some other stats, too? Like number of times each task was completed? Just curious, really. I'm curious the number of 5/5s claimed, for example.

Coop, it's a big cumbersome spreadsheet but when I get a chance I'll pull some stats from it for you. Same with bonus points winners. :)

Living in NB, one of the few things we have here is a presence of virtual caches. For those unfamiliar with virtuals, these are a non-container type of cache that were retired some time ago. The idea with them is that you are brought to an interesting place where a physical cache could not be placed for whatever reason. In many cases, virtuals would bring you to very interesting or odd places that you would never have known existed.

As part of my travels, I usually try and pick up a cache or two while I am on the road. I typically seek out virtuals and webcam caches as these are types that are very rare in our area. Given that these can no longer be listed, it’s interesting to be able to go to places that do have them and see what people have listed as virtual caches.

In a recent trip to London, I found an interesting trend. Instead of just having a typical virtual where you go somewhere and take a photo or send trivia answers, the virtuals actually had you going to multiple locations. With limited amount of time, I didn’t get a chance to do many of those but I did do a few. Of them, the one shown in the photo to the left here was probably one of my faves. This particular cache is located at the Royal Observatory and is where the prime meridian is located. The line you see in the photo divides the east from the west.

Geocaching takes us to many different places but it’s interesting to see how even caches that don’t have a physical container can still be quite something. Pretty much all of the virtuals I have been to have had either some historic or other significant purpose behind them and were definitely worth the trip.

Unfortunately, due to the abuse of virtuals, they can no longer be listed which is why I suspect they are so popular amongst cachers.

In NB alone, let alone all of Atlantic Canada, there are few virtuals to be found. I’ve done the Albert Mines cache and a few of the first post caches but outside of that, virtuals are few and far between. If you have the chance to snag these, it’s best to do them before they end up archived. Although they require no maintenance, virtuals have been known to get archived from time to time.

Have you been to any virtual caches? If so, which ones did you enjoy the most?

I only have 4 virtual caches. Three of them here in New Brunswick. The Amazing Caverns of Kitt's Cave, GC8CAE, was my first on a trip to St. Martins. This was cool because it was my first and I could also tease my son, Snake9, that I had a little ghost icon and he didn't.
I got my next two just 4 days later with Snake9. Underground Lake, GC11F6 and Albert County Caves, GC8C24 . This was the most fun caching day Snake9 and I had.
The final, The Heritage Tree - CJ7, GCGFET I got on a trip home to Newfoundland. This was a spot I knew of and had seen from a distance but had never stopped at.
All 4 were great spots and I really don't like to pick a favorite. But if I did I would have to say Albert County Caves.

I always look for them too when traveling. I have 6 found, 1 in NB, NS, QB and ON and 2 in PEI. Too bad we still can't put out a few more but it just makes them more special to find.

I have 50 of them. 7 have been archived.
They are not my favorite but I do find them , as
you do go to a specific location.
These type of caches were abused as some cachers used to get the info
on the web and log them without going to them.
I like a cache with a container best and
puzzle caches are my favorite type of cache.
I had 27 locationless caches at one time but got rid
of them as they didn't feel like caches. Didn't care about the icon.
I feel the same way about Earth caches but I still do a few.

I have had a geocaching account since 2002 but really only got back into caching at the end of 2010. So I only have 5 virtuals so far.
I did see a bunch while I was in London last month, but as Zor says many of them ask you to tour the city and if you are there working, then there isn't as much time to get them. I wish that I would have had time to get to the Royal Observatory - oh well maybe next time !!

The best virtual that I found was way back in April 2003 when I found the Blair Witch - Parr House virtual (http://coord.info/GC6B2B). For those that saw that movie it was kinda weird to be down in that basement !! The house is no longer standing but was an interesting place for sure.

I love virtuals, mainly because of their relative rarity, but most of them are just absolutely fascinating historically and often times even a little obscure. There were some very neat ones in Toronto that we did last summer but my favorites were probably the Andy Griffith statue in Raleigh, NC and the Pirate Ships in Kiptopeke state park in Virginia.

I really don't see why virtuals couldn't be reintroduced. I really like them. If they're reviewed strictly like Earthcaches, then they can still add a lot to geocaching. I've found 7 virtuals, in England, Bermuda, Québec and Alberta. Each one has brought me to a place of natural or historic interest where a physical container is impractical but are still interesting. I found a cannonball in a tree in Old Québec, stood astride the Prime Meridian in London, visited the World Heritage Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Alberta. I'd love to see them return in some form - Historic Caches being one alternative that might work. We just need the cooperation of diligent reviewers who ensure the questions asked require a visit to the actual site - just like Earthcaches.

I think we can all agree - virtuals are eminently more interesting than the Challenges, which also don't have containers.

Bringing back virtuals might very well be top of my wish list to Groundspeak.

We are certainly very far from being expert when it comes to virtuals. We only have 3, only one of which (our first one) was in NB.

What I can say is that we enjoyed very much each one of them as they brought us to very nice places of interest (discovering new places was and still is what draw us the most into geocaching).

Earth caches are also very neat. The only little thing about it is that sometimes you actually need to read an insanely long description before being able to log, and that is a bit of a bummer. I like to discover, but I like to discover what I want to discover at that particular place. I don't know if it makes any sense to you but it does to me LOL.

I think it's sad that instead of finding a way to regulate the Virtuals any better, they just chose the easy way out by just getting rid of them. Perhaps I don't understand the process, but how can it be any different than making sure that an earth cache is what it's supposed to be.

Here are the 3 we found:
GCBA8A - The First King of England
GCA68D - Stonehenge
GCA352 - Father of Confederation (Tilley)

The day we went for GCA352 will forever stay in my mind with my best memories. There was a nice little snow falling down, and my wife and I together with the 2 dogs had a very nice geocaching day.

When I saw this item I thought we had very few virtuals but was surprised to see that we had 38 of them. Only 10 were in the Maritimes but all of those were in 2004 and 2005.

I reviewed the list and it brought back memories of some of our trips.

We found a virtual last week in San Francisco and there are many more in that city, so we may do more on a future trip.

Our Uk virtuals also included one of the multi virtuals in London. One of the UK virtuals was archived in 2009, after we claimed it, but interestingly, the reviewer who archived it, indicated that he would accept emails from people claiming it. It was still being claimed in 2012.

Here is our list

5 New Brunswick
3 PEI
2 Nova Scotia
1 Ontario
1 Quebec
3 California
3 UK
6 New York City
1 New Hampshire (Hut in White Mountains)
1 New Mexico
6 Florida (all in Disny World)
2 North Carolina (On the Outer Banks)
3 Virginia
1 Saint Marten (Caribean)

I have only found 2 so far on my trip to Ireland, Blarney Cache GCGTG2 and Stiffy By the Liffy GCE388 and as others have said most bring you to significant places that you cannot physically place a container cache. Europe has lots and for my trip to Germany I am searching them out as my GF doesn't want to Cache all the time but these will be quick and easy grabs as we will most likely be in these places anyhow touring. The other aspect about them that I do like is ones such as the Stiffy By the Liffy is that it is muggle central and your not out of place taking a picture getting the info as you would be grabbing and hiding something raising the risk of suspicion trying to destroy something or someone. I think Virtual caches have their place in this sport but if they were to ever return there should be a definite guidelines around them such as the historical significance, public safety and respect to sensitive property for example.

Last April we came to California to visit our son and to geocache. We posted 4 items on CacheupNB entitled Spring Caching Trip under Pa’s caching tales category. I told stories of our caching adventures

http://www.cacheupnb.com/category/anecdotes/pas-caching-tales/page/2/

This year we have been here nearly 2 weeks and I have not posted anything yet. I will try to add comments and photos to this poat later. Meanwhile here are a few tidbits.

* A lot of the caching here, especially the urban caching, is about deception, and camo. I doont know how much detail I can give because maybe i will try and copy the ideas.

* Two days ago we hiked for over 8 hours on trails in an Open Space preserve in the hills. We pikced up 28 caches and most were pretty tough. We have to admit to using hints for a lot of them and fortunately the hints were good.

* Why do you need hints for caches on a trail? Well there is no snow so they have a lot more hiding spots and are very creative. We see a pile of branches and we think the cache is under the pile. Well the cache turns out to be a nano imbedded in the end of a branch or twig. Or it is a dark green container in the crook of a tree under a pile of moss, or a magnetic nano at ground level at the base of a sign in the woods or a tiny fake rock.

* We had the thrill of seeing caches logged by Alamogul and even did an Alamogul cache. In case you didnt know Alamogul has nearly 65,000 finds.

More later

Pa, I beg you to bring some of those idea here. I think I am getting a bit bored about geocaching when caching is now just finding a 35mm film canister or a tobacco container, with good ol camo tape, hanging in a tree (and I know I've placed my share of those!). After 1500 of those same ol same ol, they are all becoming quite boring. I love love love when it takes me forever to find a cache. P&G have their purpose, but I purposely bypass them now. It's just a mood I am in right now, together with slapping people around with a fish. I have caches at a walking distance from my home that I never went for and probably never will cause I know they are just a 35mm canister in a tree. I think we are ready for something a bit more challenging than a guard rail micro, an ammo box, or ML puzzle (ooops did I let that one get out?). Now I know lots love them MLs so don't get offended (I know you won't). But I think if we would get more of very creative and very HARD to find caches, it would probably give me the kick in the butt I need to get back outthere geocaching.

Cool!I'll make sure to get out for that one. When I was writing my first comment here, I was thinking about a couple of caches, but mostly "Scope it out", that for some reason made me feel like a little boy running around on an easter egg hunt and I loved it(I actually never had an egg hunt as a kid. My parents never made us believe in a bunny that lay chocolate eggs or a even in santa clauss. Santa to us was my uncle Serge dressing up weirdly at christmas and pass us each our gifts, then getting the beard off and getting shitface with my father and other uncles LOL. All good times :) )

Nemo there are many aspects to geocaching. I see no problem with a sries of easy caches on a trail. In fact i think many of us would get pied off if we walked 5 km to get a cache and it turns out to be a tough one. That happened to us last year when we hiked and cache for 4 hours, doing over 5 kms and going up 2800 feet and then discovering that there was a tricky hide at the top of the hill. It took a while and we persisted and found a small rock cache.

If you want interesting and tricky caches, head over to Riverview to check out some of Chatelaine's caches. Many are tricky, many are different, and many are lots of fun. Imagine finding a tree full of caches or a suitcaase full of caches, and you have to find the log. If you want tricky you must of course look for Critter's caches.

If you want a challenge, you have to go check out KDCachers caches. They bring you to places on the bay of Fundy that you never would have seen without geocaching. And if you cant figure out how to get to those caches, well, Chignecto Duo may have a series that will lead you through the woods to those caches.

If you want adventure, we have a number of series to challenge you in the Shediac to Bouctouche area.

 WEll back to my topic.

Caching in a few Open Space Preserves yesterday. We had a DNF on a cache where a rattler was sharing a space under a rock with the cache.

A DNF on a cache in a Lurking series. The series involves really well disguised caches. It was a DNF because the only thing we found lurking were ants. They were all over me. I dont think they bit me but I cant tell because I am already covered in poison oak again this year.

The other day we had a tough find n an ammo can. It was under a thinck cement slab. We had to lift the slab and there was a spot carved in it for the can.

Here is a link to some California photos, including some interesting hiding spots. I posted them on an archived cache of ours

I mentioned the great disguised caches here in California. Here is an example. You are looking for a cache on a hiking trail. You look all around GZ and you cant find it. We looked a long time and finally with luck, we put our hands on it.

Here is how it was hidden. Near GZ there was one of the trail direction posts. The cache was placed on top of the wooden post and attached to it. The cache owner made a plastic post to fit over the post and the cache. He also removed the trail information from the post and placed it on the plastic. It was so well done, that there was no way you could tell.

As usual we are getting lots of DNF. One local cacher sent us an email with hints for 3 of his caches.

Today we got a DNF for an urban cache. GZ was on the sidewalk and the hint said to remain on the sidewalk. The cache page said he made the cache container himself. We dont know where the cache was located because there was nothing on the sidewalk or next to it. No trees, no bushes, no hydrants, nothing.

Today we also did some serious hiking and caching in a couple of preserves. We looked for a long time for one of the caches and I finally spotted a piece of wood that looked like a promising spot. However, a rattler also discovered that spot and was letting me know that I was not welcome. So another DNF

 More California caching tidbits
*********************
We went for a few caches in San Francisco yesterday. We were downtown. We didnt stay long. On street parking at the meters is $3 per hour and the meters take credit cards.

Here is a picture taken at a virtual cache location. Click to make it larger. We had to determine how many toes the statue might have.

We brought a TB belonging to evulc to San Francisco to have its picture taken at Twitter headquarters. It turns out that Twitter head Office is in an AT&T bldg and there is no indication that they are there other than the information board behind the security desk in the lobby. The building was closed but we managed to get in and talk to the man at the desk and take a picture of the board (Unfortunately is was a little blurry. Had a nice chat with the gentleman who seemed interested about geocaching but had never met a cacher before. He said he was from Buffao. I asked if he was a Sabres fan and he said he wasn't even a fan of Buffalo. He said we were not the first persons to came and take a picture of the sign.

Here is a link to the TB and the photo.

We went for an interesting TB Hotel cache in Downtown San Francisco. It is located in the California Historical Society building. It is near their front window. The cache page does not indicate what building to find the cache and the signal is not strong so we erroneously went looking in a museum across the street. They knew about the cache and directed us across the street. When we arrived at the cache there was an Australian cacher sitting on the floor at the window going through it, so we immediately knew where it was. She also had been to the museum. This was a great way to have a TB Hotel in the Downtown.

Here is the cache.

We claimed a webcam cache a week ago. The cache is called TOO WEIRD, MAN. It is located inside a store called weird stuff. The camera refreshes every minute and you have to capture the picture off their webpage. Rather than have someone at a computer grabbing our picture, we learned how to do a print screen with our Iphone. We walked around the store trying to find the camera and when I saw our picture on the webpage I saved the picture and then located the camera. We then went and stood at the camera location.

Here is our log with both photos

California caching can just drive you crazy. Yesterday we did a bit of urban caching, a ot of it on foot. We got 13 finds and 7 DNF. WE set a new streak record with 5 consecutive DNF's, all in the same neighbourhoood. Not too good for the ego.

Interesting neighbourhood though. We drove up New Brunswick DR, and then saw streets called Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, Kitchener, Prince Edward, Yukon, Owen Sound, etc.

One good thing about being here is that i get to watch the Sens beat the rangers at 4 pm.

We are now back home. We managed to get a cache today even though we left California at 7 am and arrived in Moncton after 11 pm

Here is our log

We spent the day in planes and airports today and we wouldnt have continued our streak without Belladan placing this cache at the airport for us to pick up at 11:30 pm upon landing in Moncton. We also wouldnt have continued our streak if Belladan had not picked us up at the airport and provided us with a flashlight to find the cache.

You gotta love caching and the great caching people. Thanks Dan.

I’ve realized lately that I’ve become a geocaching junkie. I suffer withdrawal symptoms if I haven’t found a cache yet today, and I crave creative finds. Sometimes I dream up creative cache containers in my sleep. When I drive around town, I notice places I think would make for great hides.

I also realize that I’ve done a couple of ridiculous things seeking out caches. When seeking out one of the waypoints on Zor’s “Jacob’s Bridge” Wherigo cache, I had to make my way to the island in Centennial Park. The bridge was gone at this point and it was the middle of summer, but paulie777 and I picked a day where the water levels were low. Still, I had to wade my way to the island through chest-deep water that was full of duck feces. The island was covered in droppings as well. While I waded to the island and back, paulie777 stood on shore taking photos with his iPhone and laughing his head off. When I got home, I had to strip off in the backyard and hose myself down, and soon after went to get a tetanus shot.

Over Easter weekend, I had another interesting experience. On my way home from Bangor, I stopped to get the very last cache in Maine before the border, “End of the Tour.” This cache is less than 200 m from the Maine-New Brunswick border near Houlton. You can actually see the border from the cache itself. And there is an airport visible less than 500 m south of the cache. I was heading back home late at night, trying to beat a snowstorm, and stopped to get the cache around midnight. After finding the cache, I decided to put my flashlight into the trunk of my car before going to cross the border. This is when the Houlton Police pulled up behind me. The officer had never heard of geocaching, and thought it was mighty suspicious that I would be on this dark road, that close to the border, at that hour of day, rifling around in my trunk. He asked to inspect the contents of my trunk, and there were a tense few minutes while he debated what to do with me. I think, in the end, he thought my explanation of geocaching was so preposterous that it had to be true.

Those are my ridiculous caching experiences. I can think of a few others – scouterscott breaking his ankle seeking out “‘Sara’sponda,” mousaka getting his car stuck on a backwoods road for almost 8 hours until a tow arrived, and TheNinjaJedi breaking through ice into a “frozen” lake when going for “Gilberts Cove.”

To what lengths and misadventures have you gone to get a cache?

I seem to remember going out about this time last year, with Paulandstacey, zor and stcar to find a bunch of caches on Dubee Sett. Rd. The snow was hard and about 8-10 inches deep but Paul's Corolla could drive on top of it no problem. The problem came a few hours later when the snow got soft in the afternoon sun and the car started to sink. We had to push the car out of the snow numerous times over a kilometer or more, fun times.

http://gobreadcrumbs.com (not geobreadcrumbs as rev mistakenly mentioned) is the site i use for gpx tracks with auto-geotagged photos.

just remember to set the clock on your camera to the clock on your gps and the site will automatically put the pics on the map.

here's my track feed: http://gobreadcrumbs.com/en/user/evulc
we'll be adding a new track today. right now in fact. time to go!

Another good podcast with great guests. As CUNB is growing, how about turning it into a vidcast, like Wayne's World, anyone knows Wayne's world? Or more serious, like a talk show, with the typical desk and seats for the guests, and if you do not have a live audience, then you can use a "background laugh audio recording" like in the sitcom.
