Picked up our third Travelling Cache

This weekend we went to Calais and picked up our third Travelling Cache, One Flew over the Cuckoo´s Nest http://coord.info/GC1965 . This cache must remain in New Brunswick or Maine so many of you may have already logged it. If anyone is interested in logging it or grabbing it, we will be placing it soon in the Moncton area . Further information lower down this page.

For those who haven’t heard of them here is a definition of Travelling Caches

A traveling cache is a cache that travels from place to place. Before Groundspeak started selling and tracking travel bugs, a number of geocachers released physical caches that finders could pick up and move to a different location. A number of these caches are still active, but new traveling caches are no longer allowed to be listed on Geocaching.com.

There are now only about 45 of these caches remaining. As they run into trouble or become too cumbersome to manage online, they get archived, although many cachers do their best to try to keep them alive. Here is one of the bookmark lists

The idea behind a travelling cache is that the person who finds it, can grab it and hide it in another location. The new coords are then provided to the CO who then changes the cords. Many of the caches have restrictions on location, and may require for example that they remain in a certain state or city.

One of the rules about these caches is that they can only be claimed in their hiding place and cannot be logged while in the hands of another cacher or at an event. The cache owners have often tried to enforce this rule and some have even archived their caches when the caches were brought to events. However, these caches are extremely popular and some owners have given up trying to enforce this rule. Bernie ( http://coord.info/GC2179 ) has been crossing Canada for a number of years and has been logged mostly at events. We once had Bernie in our possession for a month, picking him up at an event in Fredericton and bringing him to two events in Quebec and three in the Ottawa area. Word got around that we had it and cachers lined up when we showed up. We even met a cacher on a country road in Quebec who realized who we were and asked us to show him Bernie.

Now back to the cache that we just grabbed. This cache is also a parasite, meaning that it must be placed in another cache. The cache owner is advised of the nesting cache in which it is placed and updates the cache page. We will soon be placing this cache in another cache and advising the owner. The owner insists that this cache can only be logged if you find it in a nesting cache. You can grab this cache and move it or you can leave this cache in the nesting cache and still claim it. The owner has indicated that he could archive it if these logging rules are not followed.

If interested in logging the cache, it might be good to put the cache on your watchlist.

  • I would love to log this cache, as I haven’t found it yet. Perhaps you can place it near one of the events over the next few days so those of us in the Moncton area that haven’t found it can log it.

  • Not sure what we will do.

We logged the cache on Saturday when we found it. Saturday evening we got an email from a Moncton area cacher who had it on their watch list. They were hoping to log it and were interested in knowing our plans

Could be a number of cachers who would like to log it but if the first cacher who gets there removes the cache, then likely nobody else can log it

Looked for caches near tomorrow’s event and not sure if any of them are a safe place for this travelling cache. May have safer caches in Riverview area for Wednesday’s event but those who would get it before the event would perhaps have to do it in the dark.

We are thinking of placing it out of town but not too far, and in a cache that would be safe from muggles. I don’t think I will give advanced warning

BTW I found this log from the CO

Please note her mission is now to remain within Maine and New Brunswick, allowing us better access for maintenance.
If all goes well for a while, we’ll look at letting her fly worldwide again.

  • I found that cache a few years ago and brought it to Boston for the weekend, which caused some “ripples” but we had planned to bring it back in two days. Hopefully if it get placed in a local cache it will stay there for most area cachers to get it before it moves again but someone may take it right away.

  • This cache showed up at the Mega and the owner spent a couple hours trying to find it to get it out of there to make sure the strict rules are followed.

  • The travelling cache was placed in a Shediac cache but did not stay very long. Here are the two related logs

    Caching Ninjas

Mrs. The Cookers was VERY eager to get this cache, so we may or may not have played hooky from work to go get this one!

It was a beautiful day for a drive and a nice easy cache to find.

    Thanks a ton!

    The Cookers

Saw her land with the help of Mr. CachingNinjas. I wasn’t sure if I should take her or not but I finally decided to take her with me. This is my first experience with this type of cache and I wanted to experience every part of it. I cursed M. Hawkins after he took her from Pom’s New Adventure but I now know how he felt at finding her. I will get her relocated soon. Thanks for the fun.
