GSAK
GSAK is the all in one Geocaching and waypoint management tool.
Major features include: Multiple databases, sending/receiving waypoints to GPSr, Google maps, conversion to many mapping formats, PDA output (including CacheMate support), HTML output, extensive searching, macro support, backup and restore, distance/direction from other waypoints (including caches, locations, post codes) and much more. GSAK only runs on Windows operating systems (98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7) — Taken from their website, www.gsak.net.
This tool is considered to be a more “power” tool for advanced cachers. Although anyone can use it, some folks find GSAK a little intimidating when starting out and tend to ease more towards something like EasyGPS until they get the hang of it.
One of the biggest advantages to GSAK is that you have the ability to use Macros. Macros are simply custom little “applets” that integrate with GSAK to allow it to do more than it already does.
Some of the more commonly used macros consist of things like:
- Creating a “stats” page for your account on Geocaching.com
- Converting a GPX file from your GPS into a Field Notes file to allow you to post your logs on Geocaching.com much easier.
- Send a GPX file to a Nuvi/car-based GPS with the cache hints, logs, and full descriptions.
Those are just a couple of small macros but there are a ton out there.
GSAK is free to start but issues a nag warning after 21 days and the length of the warning gets longer each time you use the application. GSAK is $25USD and can be purchased through it’s official website, www.gsak.net.
