Snapping Those Webcam Caches

Last week it was Earthcaches, this week it’s Webcam caches.

On a recent trip for work, I had the opportunity to snag two more webcam caches and it got me to thinking. These are yet one more cache type that are hard to find these days and are definitely limited in number due to the inability to list them anymore.

For the uninitiated, webcam caches are geocaches that require you to go to a particular location and get your photo taken by a webcam. In many cases, this involves you calling up a friend while you’re standing in front of the camera, and getting your friend to navigate to the webcam’s web page, and save the photo of you on it.

I’ve done around 12 of these caches and for most of them, I’ve used a combination of both my GPSwebcam and my smartphone. Since most smartphones have access to the internet, I’ve used the screen capture feature of my phone to capture the image of myself on camera. One of the fun things I have found with these caches is that it’s interesting to try and figure out exactly where the camera is. It’s not just about getting to the spot, but actually finding the camera that’s looking at you.

As far as I know, there’s only one webcam cache left in all of NB.

When I travel to some place new, I always try and see if I can pick up a webcam cache, if one’s available. Since they are few and far between, it’s a bit of a treat.

Have you found a webcam cache? If so, where and when was it?

  • I’ve found 5 of them, including all 3 of the active ones in New Zealand. I think they’re a neat change from regular caches, with the caveat that it is much harder to log these stealthily. Almost all of the ones I’ve seen require you to hold something up to identify yourself, and many are in public places, making it hard to be subtle. I was definitely approached by a security guard when trying to log http://coord.info/GLBPPCEW in the dark, especially when we had to position our rental car to shine the headlights on me for the photo.

  • There is one in WEST SAINT JOHN. GCPV2R
I have been looking at that one for some time as I don’t have a webcam cache. Hopefully someday.

  • We have done 2 webcam caches. We did one in Chester, NS, GCHV4J the summer of the first Maritime Mega. I don’t remember who took the photo, probably my brother-in-law. The other was just this past fall in New Hampshire, GCN32T, at the top of Mount Washington. We asked the NB geocaching community to help us out and we got about 10 pics to choose from. I couldn’t use my phone up there so we really appreciated all the help we got! That one was lots of fun and we lucked out and had a beautiful day, weather-wise, for it.

  • I was stoked the day I got GC6F12 London – Beatles Abbey Road. NBGamer22 and I were on our way to Prague but stayed a couple nights in London. The Abbey Road crosswalk photo and this cache were bucket list items.
See the online webcam, I never get tired of checking it out by day, it’s HD with audio. The app work well too. http://www.abbeyroad.com/crossing
