The Holy Grails of Geocaching

I recently found Canada’s first geocache while on a visit to Nova Scotia, and it got me thinking: what are some of the Holy Grails of Geocaching? I’m not just talking about New Brunswick-centric or even Canada-centric caches, but rather any of the finds that you would put on your dream list. These are the Must Dos for any geocacher, if you’ve got the means. I’ll get things started:

  •   GCBBA Geocache–Canada’s 1st geocache
    • The first geocache in Canada, located about 40 km west of Halifax, Nova Scotia
  •   GC760 Beginners Luck? First Geocache in New Brunswick !
    • Hidden by our very own Insp Gadget way back in the dog days of April 2001, west of Campbellton, New Brunswick
  •   GCK7HH Royal Observatory Greenwich Cache
    • The Prime Meridian from which all longitude is measured and where your GPS shows a longitude of 0˚00.000′, located in Greewich, London, UK
  •   GCK25B Groundspeak Headquarters
    • The head office of geocaching.com, in Fremont, Washington, USA
  •   GCGV0P Original Stash Tribute Plaque
    • The location where Dave Ullmer hid the very first GPS stash in May 2000, near Beavercreek, Oregon, USA
  •   GCC67 Mission 4: Southern Bowl
    • The sole remaining Project APE cache, located in Intervales Park outside of São Paulo, Brazil
  •   GC1BE91 International Space Station
    • For the very wealthy and talented amongst us. Located 250 miles above your head, with semi-irregular departures from Kazakhstan

  • Two of the three Holy Grail caches for myself are actually in your list. GCK25B, and GCGV0P are both caches I really wanted to get. The other one that I had which is not listed here is GC1169 (Mission 9: Tunnel of Light) which was archived last year I believe. I was fortunate in that in a trip to Geowoodstock 8, I got all three. Here are my logs: GL41467B, GL417ZWY, and GL41CYDQ

The first cache in Canada is definitely a good one to have but to be honest, it’s location is a little disappointing given the significance of the cache. Still though, it’s a good one to have. I have not yet found NB’s first cache so one of these days I’ll get up there.

For me, the only other real Holy Grail caches would be ones located in either Egypt or Australia as those are two places that I really want to visit. When I finally get the chance to log one of those, it will be a sweet day.

  • GCK25B is one that I would love to get. The one on the ISS sounds unreachable for me, you need to be a pretty near a millonare. I would also love to find GCBBA, and see what the journey is like into it. One holy grail that might be accomplished this summer is finding a cache in Venuzvela.

  • Got the first two, don’t see any others in the foreseeable future unless I win the lotto. I have one 500m from my house I haven’t even found in the last month.

  • http://coord.info/GC18FHR This one in Germany is high on my list and will be accomplished in Sept as it will prob be one of the only ones on that big of mountains that I will be able to get. The other one is the top of Eagles Nest, Hitlers’ Hideout
