Your Geocaching Vacation

For some of us, geocaching is just something we do when we have some spare time and want to go see either a nice trail, or experience some urban caching. But for others, geocaching consumes their lives and therefore comes out in many different ways. Vacations are one example.

Have you ever planned your vacation around geocaching? It’s interesting when you decide to take time off from your day to day life to go on vacation but end up spending a considerable amount of time geocaching. Whether it’s because the area is new and you want to see those hidden gems, or you’re just that into the hobby that it really does bleed into everything you do.

Back in 2010, I planned my own vacation around a trip to Seattle to visit HQ and one of the remaining Ape caches (which has since been archived) along with GeoWoodstock. Below you’ll find links to the series of articles I wrote about my experience out on vacation.

  • When I go out camping with the family, I usually try and and get up about 1-2 hours earlier than everyone else, and go for a caching run in the morning. Depending on the length of the trip, I can usually get a half or partial day where we as a family will just cache and explore. But the vacation is more about family time and the girls, so that is the primary focus for me. That is how we are planning our PEI vacation this summer.

  • We plan most of our vacations around geocaching. Sometimes, because we’re taking Cachemporium to events out of town/province, we’ll take a few extra days to get a mini-vacation in with that and will find a few.

We have not cached a lot the last few years, with working full-time, the business and our grandson taking up most of our time, so when we go on vacation we usually spend most of it relaxing and caching. Our numbers always go way up when we’re on holiday. We’ll decide where we want to go and then look at the GC maps to see what caching is like in the area, find the favourites and must-do’s, read the logs of caches, etc. And, as usual, caching takes us to all the best places in an unfamiliar area anyway!
