Come Out & Play

This program has been discontinued. Information on it is for archive purposes only.

Come Out & Play is a yearly winter geocaching contest put on by milosheart, and hosted by Cache Up NB. This contest serves as the main winter contest for geocachers in the province of New Brunswick and has become one of the most popular activites during the winter months.

In previous years, New Brunswick tended to have regional winter hiding contests. Different areas (Fredericton, Saint John, etc) would have an unofficial contest that would pit geocachers against each other to see how many new geocaches they could hide during the winter. This was a way to help inspire locals to get out caching during the winter months. There were both positive and negative aspects to these contests but the idea was to try and at least keep people motivated to geocache in the winter time.

After the explosion of geocaching in the Fredericton area, their winter hiding contest saw more than 300+ geocaches hidden in the run of the winter. The following year milosheart decided to try and put on a contest that was a bit different than the typical hiding contests we’d seen previously. Thus, Come Out & Play was born.

The contest consists of a series of “tasks” of which geocachers must perform. There is usually 40+ tasks but you can only choose to do 20. Each task is worth a certain amount of points and the idea is to score as many points, or as few points, as possible by performing the different tasks. Each task involves either the finding or hiding of a geocache. Simple tasks could include something like finding a geocache with a “Kid Friendly” attribute. A harder task may be finding a 5/5 rated cache.

Cache Up NB partnered with milosheart to help facilitate the contest and make it easier for geocachers to join and submit their claims. By having all participants join and submit their claims through an automated process on Cache Up NB, it’s helped milosheart organize the contest materials better, and it’s helped to promote a larger sense of community amongst geocachers in New Brunswick. Last year’s contest saw more than 100 geocachers participate and each year it continues to grow.

The contest typically runs from November to March. A banner on the main page for Cache Up NB will lead you to the contest details, tasks, claims, and other information. If the banner is not present, it simply means the contest is not active at this time.
