Pa's Caching Tales

Interesting caching meeting and other stuff.

1. Historical meeting?

Title makes no sense but I wanted your attention. Yesterday we were at a reservoir in Saint John getting the Saint John NB trail cache. On the way back to our vehicle we walked by two people. One was an elderly lady who was tired and was resting on a rock. I stopped to be friendly and then I mentioned that we were geocaching. The gentleman said that he knew all about geocaching and that he had hid the second cache in New Brunswick. It was near the reservoir and that he had hid two other caches. He said his caching name was frazzled and it meant nothing to me. I couldn’t find his name on GC.com when I got home, so I checked the early finds for Insp Gadget. I recalled that in 2001, Insp Gadget hid the first cache in NB. Insp Gadget said that when the next cache came out, he drove all the way from Campbellton to Saint John to get it. It turns out it was hidden by frazzeled4

2 Got our August Souvenirs and last NB Trail cache

We still needed our august souvenirs and a couple fo NB trail caches so we spent 2 days in Fredericton and saint John areas grabbing a multi, and earthcache and a letterbox hybrid. We felt the hybrid would be a good alternative to a Wherigo but the closest one was in the back end of Rockwood Park where the trails are not as obvious. Tuesday we hiked about 7 km in the Fredericton area. As we headed back to our vehicle, a truck pulls over and Madpuck jumps out to say hello, and chat and offer us a snack. Wednesday we did nearly 10 kms on trails mostly along highway 7 in GrandBay area. We have to go back in that area. Some nice series along there and across the ferry on the Kingston Peninsula. We may wait till the flies are gone. They were ferocious.

3 Getting old shouldn’t stop you.

Every couple of years we go hiking in UK with friends including Globuf and a couple (Wayne and Dianne) from Virginia. Wayne and Dianne happened to be in Sussex visiting a friend on Monday so we drove there to spent the day with them. Why were they in Sussex? Well they happened to be in Maine and wanted to cross the border to meet their NB friends. Wayne was in Maine as he just finished his bike ride from Florida to Maine. Not bad for a 73 year old guy. Dianne did half the ride with him but had to quit for a minor medical situation. She went to her doctor for a thyroid problem and complained that she could not bike as she would like as she often got tired after 20 miles a day. The doctor said that most patients her age could not get on a bike (she is 76). Her problem is now solved and she likely will be doing big mileage again and we will be hiking with them next year.

    4 Race for Cache

We attended the event but did not participate. Everyone was so impressed with Zor’s work and organizational skills on this event. An incredible job and a really good team. Certainly gives us confidence in the success of the MEGA.
