Bushwhacking

The recent post about the most memorable find got me thinking about some of the more memorable finds i had done and i think time and time again it comes down to the ones that i bushwhacked into the hard way. recently on sportsman01’s “just a cache” i noted in my log that everything i have learned about bushwhacking i learned from his caches and anybody that has done any of his will surly echo my comments. So when it comes down to it the two caches that i remember the most for bushwhacking experiences would have to be Sporty’s FLEUR de LIS and GOT A BOAT.

FLEUR de LIS

First off FTF!!!!

Now this was one of the hardest caches I’ve had to go out and get but not because the cache was hard to find or that the “proper” Terrain was hard to cross but because of my own stupidity instead of taking the logging road i thought the stream bed might look like a nice trail to follow. yeah well that didn’t work out followed that for a little while just enough to realize i was going the wrong way and instead of head back and taking the right track i started bushwhacking. Big mistake. the snow in the woods is very soft and very deep 3 ft roughly so after slogging through 3 foot snow for 1km i finally reach the logging trail walked out to get the cache. signed the log and left the bad mojo geocoin (maybe carrying it along was my mistake HEHE). and walked back out so a supposedly 2 hour walk turned into a 4 hour cold wet hike. Now the next memorable cache would have to be off Davidson lake “Got a Boat?” Well i thought it would be much easier to hike in from the TCH as looking at the satellite photos should what appeared to be a cleared section and a nice straight approach to a cache i would normally not have the opportunity to go get. That was a bad idea instead of a nice clear area i was presented with a large expanse of wet swampy land dotted with those trees that grow out from a central core (tree people can supply a name for sure) So the entire hike/bushwhack was jumping from tree grouping to tree grouping and the couple of cleared and dry areas i did encounter was full of knee high raspberry bushes that didn’t like by bare legs at all.

Got a Boat ?

So i decided i’d try to grab this Cache from the highway and if ever anybody decides that this is a good idea it isn’t the 3.4 km round trip was 3/4 swamp and 1/4 Thorn bushes so it was well deserved of the 5 terrain rating. after visiting the cache site i decided to see if kingpat and dotface were home but alas they weren’t then headed back through the hardest and wettest bushwhack. TFTH and the adventure!!

needless to say I’ve learned a lot about bushwhacking and proper footwear/ clothing for bushwhacking. That’s not to say i won’t be stuck somewhere that i need to bushwhack and be unprepared again but i’ll at least say i’m smarter.

  • I guess I too enjoy a bit of challenging bushwhacking. Here is the example that popped up in my mind the minute I’ve seen this title.
I could have used some of the roads/trails in there, but I decided to bushwhack, and at one point ended up in front of a very steep cliff that I had to climb. Another very memorable moment.

I Parked at the Dominion park, bushwhacked to the knock knock cache, then continued my way through the “Jungle” for this one. Man this was bushwhacking at its best!!! But I must say that after doing the whole trail at Black Beach this morning, then Milford’s Mountain cache, then those 2, when I got back to the truck, I could not wait to get home and sit down with a nice Rum and eggnog! Now that my caches are all logged, I can sit down and sip my well deserved drink! One nice day of geocaching. SLTNLN. Tks for this cache!

And this is the cache that I refer too at Black Beach, another nice one, where I did not bushwhacked though. GC1FKNT, a multi:

A walk in the woods for sure. I loved it and the dog as well! Tks so much for bringing me here. Once I got the coordinates for the last stage in the GPS and I was approx 600m from the cache. Against my better judgment I followed the trail, which was leading me away from the cache. ? Once I was 1300m from it and still walking away, I figured: will this ever turn around? I am NOT disappointed that I followed the trail all the way instead of trying to bushwhack my way through when I was closer. There is a lot of nice scenery, all kinds of different woods, swamp etc. Such a nice place. SLTN, left a geocoin. TFTC!

Coming back to bushwhacking, I was thinking about putting one up north, where one would have to do some SIGNIFICANT bushwhacking to get there … Yep, the more I think about it, the more I think this will be the next cache I will put out.
