Cache Maintenance Prior to MM2

Maritime Mega II will be bringing approximately 500 people to Fredericton in July. A good portion of those people are from out of town, out of province and even out of country. They will all be traveling through some part of beautiful New Brunswick to get here. Most of them will likely cache as they travel so many NB caches will receive a higher than normal find rate during that time. It is incumbent on us (all NB cachers) to make sure that our caches are in good shape and have plenty of logging space for these visitors.
In preparation for the event, we’re hoping that all cachers and cache owners in the Fredericton area, and New Brunswick in general, will be willing to do maintenance on their own caches, or any they come across when out caching, from now until July 20th.
If you are out caching and come across wet log sheets, please replace them. Even if they are dry but almost full, please replace them. Remember, there will be 500 cachers in town that day so some caches will be getting found a lot! Keep the old logs and email the owner to see if they want them. If they don’t want them, save them for Moongrl, a local Fredericton cacher and artist who wants them for a piece she’s working on. Cache Up NB has different templates you can print off if you need log sheets (https://www.cacheupnb.com/printables/). If you find containers that need to be repaired or replaced, please post a “needs maintenance” log.
If you are a cache owner, please respond to other cachers who mention logs, repairs needed, etc., and please, do not be offended if you get “needs maintenance” logs. If you cannot get to them to repair/replace yourself, we will be doing at least one maintenance run (possibly more) after the May brunch (May 26th) and will be focusing on those caches with “needs maintenance” logs. If they are not flagged as such then we cannot filter out the good ones to get to the damaged ones. We will also be providing extra log sheets for anyone who wants them. We will be going out in groups to do maintenance so please consider joining us. The more the merrier!

This is also an opportune time to take a good look at the caches you own and archive any that you feel need it, thus opening up space for some new ones to be placed prior to the Mega.
We hope that all NB cachers will join together and help out where they can to make both the Mega and the caching experiences of our visitors memorable….for all the right reasons!

milosheart

We're milosheart, also known as Gwen & Terry LeBlanc. We're from Fredericton and have been involved with geocaching since March 2008. When we started caching we each had our own accounts/names. He was Frogger57 and I was milosheart. milo is a nickname of Terry's (from a song he messed up the words to) and, well, I'm his heart (we're still on our honeymoon, 6 yrs on). He logged his first 19 caches then gave up. He loves to go caching, loves the driving, travelling, meeting fellow cachers, searching and finding but could care less about the logging, planning, numbers, etc. He doesn't know how to use the GPS and has no desire to learn, doesn't have a clue what GSAK is, nor care. I love him more for just going with me, blindly sometimes! LOL So we just continued on using my original account and became team milosheart. We cache here in Freddy Beach, Moncton (Terry's hometown), Saint John (my sister and fellow cacher, eebee, lives there) and just about anywhere else we go. Yes, we are addicted. Happily.

  • I think it’s important to note that the bulk of the maintenance will likely be done in the Fredericton area since that’s where the mega will be.

It does not mean that folks in other parts of the province shouldn’t consider doing maintenance either. Folks coming from NS will pass through Sackville and Moncton so maintenance should be done on caches you know need it. Same thing for folks coming from Maine or possibly Quebec. They’d be passing through St Stephen, Saint John, Woodstock, and other areas where maintenance should be done.

Regardless, we all should be doing maintenance whether or not there’s a mega coming 🙂
