Caching the Dobson Trail on May 27

Globuf and I are planning to cache the stretch of the Dobson Trail from Prosser Brook (GC1EKZ4) to the Turtle Creek Road (GC1GK6W) on May 27 and hoping that others of you will join us.  We would leave from Prosser Creek at 10:00 a.m., where I understand that parking is more plentiful, and hike to the Turtle Creek Road (Hwy 910) where we will have a car parked to ferry people back to their vehicles.  There are 24 caches along this stretch of the trail.  I am told that it is the driest section of the trail and boasts some magnificent scenery.

  • Chatelaine, ask Didi’s mom to take care of the kids at your next card game, and if she agrees, Didi and I are in 🙂

  • Sounds like a blast. I’ve done this section already but it is definitely a good hike. You picked the right direction to go for this one. Hope you have a good turnout.

I’ll be there with the whole fam damily! ;-). Even gonna bring my mom along she can’t wait. Yay!

  • Great choice.

    Here is some background information.

We have done the Dobson trail a number of times and this section is our favorite. It is generally known as the Prosser Ridge to Berryton section and I think it is about 8.5 kms. It is the driest section and is all downhill in the direction that has been chosen.

The scenery is great and is particularly spectacular in the first section when you get views from Prosser Ridge. It is particularly beautiful in the autumn but it is nice year round.

One of the reasons this hike is so nice is the maintenance. This section is maintained by the Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts Club. They bring a work crew through here every spring. I guess globuf is aware of this since she i a member of the Club.

I recently spoke to Bill Mayo of the Club who told me that the section is in good shape this year, partly because there was a major maintenance in spring 2011 to get rid of the downed trees caused by the heavy snow that winter. (BTW Bill is 79 and he will be leading a maintenance group to do a section of the Fundy Footpath. He is also personally responsible for maintenance of the portion of the Dobson closest to Fundy National Park)

I know you are all going to enjoy the day. I guess we should all remember to thank Hillbilly Bob for covering the trail with caches.

IT SHOULD BE A FANTASTIC DAY OF GEOCACHING.

    • Thanks, Pa, for those very encouraging words. It would appear as though this section of the trail, as recommended by evulc, was a great choice! It would appears that we will have a good turnout, should be a great day – great trail, great scenery and great company!

      • superwife & i just got our event GC3KE4W to climb hayward pinnacle
published, hope you can join us on June 3.

  • superwife & I stopped by the trailhead today while out hiding some caches not far away 😉

The prossor brook rd is in great shape and the parking area near the trail head has been expanded since last year. loads of room!

Also, it looks like the maintainers of that dobson trail section have re-done the blazes already so maintenance along the path might already be done as well. Smooth sailing!

I checked the parking area near Berryton which has new blazes as well. Please take note whoever parks there that there is a BUNCH of shattered glass right in the middle of the obvious pull off area there. Sadly, this is nothing new and even google saw broken glass there when they took pictures last in Sep 2009. http://g.co/maps/f77yz

    See you there!

  • At Berryton, I think there is no one living in the nearby house, but when there was, there was an instance when someone had put nails in that spot. But there should be room to park along the road at that spot

  • It sounds as though “they” have been prepping for our proposed hike, even the weather looks to be cooperating.

Can somebody estimate the time it will take to drive from Riverview to Prosser Creek?

  • 20-25 minutes? I would like to go but have already done that section and have other plans. I did DNF a couple that were covered in snow at the time I went.

  • 10 am works for me. I don’t get off work till midnight on Saturday, provided there isn’t any overtime. But I guess this is everyones decision, not just mine. If others want to start earlier, let me know, I’ll work with it.

  • I was for an early start, BUT, if for some/any, like our favourite alien, it works better at 10am, than we are perfectly fine with 10am, I promise.

  • So up to now for tomorrow’s hike there is: Chatelaine, Globuv, Evulc Superwife and the kids, E.B.E51 (with Snake?), Nemo, Didi, and who else?

  • So lets see if I got my info correct. We will start caching at 10 am with “What in Blue Blazes?” GC1EKZ4 on Prosser Creek Road. I assume someone will be leaving their car on Turtle Creek Road as they pass by and jump in with someone else for the rest of the drive to Prosser Creek Road. Anyone have any plans for that set up.
I will be at work this evening so I will not be able to check back until midnight or so. I should be at Prosser Creek Road before 10 am.
Snake9 has a friend over this weekend so he will not be with me.

  • Yes, we meet at Prosser Creek Road and begin with What in Blue Blazes. I will leave my car at Turtle Creek Road and drive the rest of the way with Globuf.

We begin at 10:00 a.m. See you then!

  • Should we plan for another vehicule at the end? or only the one you will leave there will be enought to haul back the others to their cars?

  • nemo: if you would like to leave your vehicle too, let me know & i will pick you & didi up along the way. i’ll check back here in the morning. you have my number too.

  • Sure. I could then haul all of yous back to your van after or vise versa. The thing is, you will all have to crawl in the back of my little Ford Ranger, in the box that is 🙂
I’ll try to find your phone number. We could meet at the end so to leave an extra vehicule there. How about @ 9:30-9:40 ish @ GC1GK6W, is that too early?

  • Million thanks to Chatelaine for organizing this geocaching hike. Didi and I had a lot of fun being part of Team Chateaux ( not sure if we can do an accent circumflexe yet on here). Awesome day. Tks

        • the words are chapeau for hat

          AND

château for castle. The accent gives the sound AW.

There was talk at one point that the French would get rid of accents. Makes sense. After all in English there is no need of accents to allow us to pronounce all the following different sounding words:

          tough
          though
          through
          cough
          bough

  • Thanks everyone for the great day. I signed Team ^.
Hey, isn’t that the ^ that the evil one traded me for the alien. No wait, that was the *.

  • A great day on the trail. All the advice was bang-on, a nice dry run, fairly easy going, most downhill but a few climbs to get those quads working. The only element better than the weather was the company. Dexter stole the show and will feature prominently in my logs!
