Consecutive Caching Days Challenge Geocaches

89 consecutive geocaching days…. and caching has become a chore. I see Jim52 has placed 150 days and 200 days challenge caches. I don’t think I’ll continue after 100. If I don’t, unfortunately I’ll have to place those two caches on my ignore list. I’m glad I only have 11 days left…I didn’t see this negative effect coming.
For me, these challenge caches are a bad idea. They have taken some of the fun and enjoyment out of the game for me.
Has anyone else become a “slave” to consecutive days?

  • I’m caching until I have a longer caching streak than caching slump. Soooo, that’s 38 days or so. Oy. So yes, I feel like a bit of a slave.

  • I can tell u that during my 180 streak the last few months were NOT fun and definitely felt like a chore to me. Glad to have that behind me.

  • In my case, I enjoy many challenge caches but the consecutive day type challenge is not one of them. I am currently working on the 366 day challenge (5 days left to fill). I also enjoy alpha challenges, Puzzle challenges etc. I am also working slowly on the Fizzy challenge but this one will take some time (currently stand at 69/81). Basically, it boils down to wanting to go out caching or having to go out caching and as a result, “saving” caches to be found as part of a challenge.

  • I am at 175 days so I will probably go to 200 and stop. It isn’t the going out everyday that bothers me, it is only being able to get one a day so I don’t run out of caches. I am now driving about 20km a day to get one some days and when I am out I would like to get at least 5-10 caches but have to stop at one. A cache came out 1.5 kms from me and I have to save it for a rainy or a day where I forget to find one and it is 11pm.

  • Personally, I am amazed at the people that can keep a streak like that going. It is one thing if you are retired, but for those who have work/family commitments, kudoos to you all. For me, I am ignoring them. Caching for me is fun, and I have to cache every day to get a particular challenge cache, it will soon become a chore, rather than being fun. You would think being on EI right not would give a guy the time to do it, but no. 🙂

  • I am so not interested in any of the “challenge caches”. To me geocaching is about to go out, have fun and most importantly take my time and smell the roses. I got 45 caches in one day and that was probably a bit over my quota to still call it a leisure vs a chore. I also went out 12 days in a row and that was just because I was in a feeling I wanted to cache for those days, I never even realised I was out for 12 days in a row (Tks to the stats, I know about the 12 days). Those caches are not representing what geocaching is to me, and therefore I think they just suck. Others like ’em and that is fine.
    Viva la ignora lista.

  • I truly hope Jim52 is not taking this as a personal attack because I really don’t think it is meant to be. I assume that he saw how the 100 day streak cache was being so heavily talked about and that many cachers were trying to get it and he thought that adding more would keep the excitement up. Unfortunitley I think it is being viewed as an unattainable group of caches by almost everyone and really isn’t needed. I also think that the same discussions would have come up no matter who listed them, so please Jim don’t think it is you, it is the idea that is getting the bad rap. I say leave them be if you wish and let everyone else decide if they want to ignore or find. Just like Paul’s cache on top of the pole, most people will ignore it and move on and I believe Paul is aware and OK with that.

    • This is absoluetly NOT a personal attack against Jim, ABSOLUTELY IN NO WAY is it meant to be. It’s just like you say Rev… for me, the caches will be unattainable, and that’s all I’m saying. Even having to go out today to get my daily cache bugged me, but I’m so close to 100, that I’ll get there and quit. Where do we stop? Do we publish 250, 300, and 350 day caches too? I find the whole thing a little ridiculous. Just my opinion is all.

  • We never compare our numbers to others. We get our numbers because we are retired, we like to hike, we take short 2 to 4 day geocaching holidays nearby, we like doing puzzles, etc. Others have jobs and/or families which does not allow them to cache as much as others.

The same goes for the challenges. Some have the time to do them and some dont. Some enjoy the challenge and some find it boring.

I can see that the challenge would be really tough for people who have been caching for a long time and who are not retired. New cachers in urban areas may have a lot easier time completing the challenges.

We are now at 165 days including Calif and UK and hope to continue till the end of December when we will be in a situation preventing us from caching everyday.

We use the challenges, in conjunction with shopping, or seeing JIm at MacD or a Sunday drive to Joggins, or attacking a series in Sussex, or a hike on a bike trail, or a pleasant morning in Port Elgin with Belladan, or breakfast with friends, etc.

IF you enjoy them, then do them, if not, just ignore them.

  • Not to beat a dead horse or anything but I just wanted to say that I enjoyed my 37 consecutive days so far, but I’m quitting today. This was the first day for me where timing was just bad and the weather sucked and I just didn’t feel like it. It would have been a chore to go out and I saw how other more experienced geocachers that made it to 100 or more consecutive days almost all had the same thing to say… I didn’t want it to get to that point for me.

Yesterday my boys and I found 18 caches in the mud and rain, my 5 year old walked more than 2km in his rubber boots in the mud, we did the full 15 cache series on the service road from Scoudouc to Memramcook. It was great. Today I just wasn’t feeling it.

Anyway, just wanted to share that. Going to focus on quality geocaching rather than quantity.

  • I had a goal of reaching 200, I lasted 11 more days after that and that was enough. Kinda feels good, now I want to let some pile up and go out for bunches, I like that much better. I think any other challenges that I can’t or don’t want to do are going on the ignore list.

  • Yesterday snapped my streak as well. I made it to 111 which was one day longer than my slump. I’m so happy to be free!!!

  • day 244 today

tomorrow day 245 in salisbury area with Chignecto Duo

Sunday caching breakfast will be 246

  • Today is day 275 for us. We should then be able to get 2 or 3 more days but then we will be in a location without caches so the streak will end.

We have 8 zero days in January and February and then our calendar days will be filled. We should have no problem unless there is a major snow storm.

We also have 5 days in January and February with only one find and we hope to get a second find on those days

  • Odd coincidence yesterday. We are in Bathurst visiting my in-laws for the holidays. We were at Walmart seeing if there were any deals, and as we were packing the kids into the van to head back, look who saunters up, but Scouter_Rick! His family is originally from Campbellton, and they visit over the holidays every year. They were making a pit-stop on the way through, and just happened to park his car almost directly in front of my van. It was great to chat with him as I haven’t seen him in a few months.

But, to the point of the story. I asked him if his continuous days streak was still going, and he told me yes, 260 days strong. Impressive!

  • I cannot understand how you guys manage to pull streaks for that long. First there needs to be a lot of caches nearby, second you need to contain yourself and only get one at a time and third you gotta go out even on days where the weather is not that good. Maybe it would be interesting to hear in a future podcast what kind of planning is required for this ? I mean, you always need a plan B right, in case you can’t find the cache that you planned for that day. And I assume you get the ones far away from home on days where you have more time to spend, so you have a close one when you are on a tight schedule ?

Anyways, hats off to you. My longest streak is around 8 days I think and I’d have a hard time beating that haha.
