Dead drops

The world is getting more and more interactive.

But at what expense?  The security of your computer or smartphone?

People are finding new ways to connect, and are getting more and more inventive. Have you ever heard of Dead Drops?

They are USB sticks embedded (literally) in walls and such. And folks blindly plug their laptops into these USBs and share whatever.

Too me, the security risks far outway any temptation I may have to try it. Too many freaks out there.

Check out the link and the video. What do you think?

  • Just having something that doesn’t ‘auto-run’ the code on a USB key should suffice, you cant get a virus if nothing on the key ‘runs’ on your machine,I have an android tablet with a USB jack that I would not fear connecting,it doesn’t auto run anything.

Having said that, there’s a much more fun game to play where you lay infected USB sticks outside of fancy office buildings and then watch to see how many times people in that building break their company security policies.

    Now THAT’S entertainment!

Regardless, this is not the type of game the standard computer user should get into at all. Too many opportunities to get nabbed by dirty cheap mischeif and tricks if you aren’t familiar with the known pitfalls like the ones everyone here is describing.

  • I am not sure I even get the point of playing this. Doesn’t sound all that fun to me.

Funny enough, I felt the same way the first time I heard about geocaching.!

I was working in the Saint John area at that time, and one of my “wife to be” friends told us about her wanting to put a plastic container on her lawn, so people around the world could find it with a GPS. I figured: Wha?? How stupid! Why in hell people around the world would want to find a tupperware container on my lawn, and worse why in hell would I want to go find a tupperware container on your lawn!!!! Then I got a GPS, and went stupid once finding a tupperware container behind the Tim Horton in Grand Bay and it felt GREAT. Then I went stupid again finding another of those containers, and today I am proud that I went stupid 1584 times and wish I had more times in my hands to go out for more, and more, and more…. 🙂
