Earthcaches, 7 years old today!

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the first Earthcache. The first Earthcache ” Earthcache I – a simple geology tour ofWasp Head – GCHFT2” was published on this date in 2004 by Geoaware. Geoaware is the current Earthcache reviewer, he does them all.

To publish an Earthcache you have to go to www.earthcache.org to get it listed. This website has all the information needed to get one published.

Earthcaches are awesome, they require a little bit of work to get all the information right and develop a form of “testing the finder” to ensure that they completed the required task and actually learned something about the site in order to log it. After the Earthcache gets published your work as the owner is pretty much done, no container, log sheets or muggles to worry about, all you need to do is review the found logs to make sure they meet the requirements.

I love finding Earthcaches and would like to find some more areas where I could publish one. If you haven’t found one or hidden one I recommend you doing so, it is worth the effort. I think that most of my favorite finds have been Earthcaches and when I think back to some of the more memorable ones I have found they were usually group hikes to great spots.

There are definitely some memorable awesome earthcaches out there… once all the oxbow lakes are filtered out. Some of my favourite caches include some amazing earthcaches, like the waterfall at Howland falls. We’re looking for a cool place to “hide” one ourselves.
