Ever find a cache when not looking?

Yesterday I headed out on the Dobson trail to do some maintenance and maybe hide a couple new ones because Zonker recently archive a few of his on the trail. Both of my caches were gone so I archived both and re-hid a new one in one of the spots. I also scoped out a couple of spots where there were at least 2 previous caches at both places but were now empty again. The  first one I placed about 20 feet closer to the trail than the previous one there and headed down to place the second one. When I got there I walked in and choose a tree, my wife who was with me said she could see it from the trail so I picked the tree next to it and looked up and found a cache was already hanging there. I opened it up and got real confused because it had a full log sheet, without my name on it but I did not have any caches listed in that spot so I must have found it before. Since I had no idea what cache it was I left it there and went home to investigate. Turns out I did find it with a group but who ever wrote down everyones name must have not put mine down. Now that I know it was one Zonker archived but could not find to remove, I am going to replace the log and list it under my name after confirming the co-ordinates.

I would assume that people may have found parts of multis or puzzles not knowing they were there or old archived caches that were lost or left there, so have you ever found a cache you were not looking for?

In my world I call that geo trash. Perfectly good containers suitable for Geocaching, but they don’t exist. Only a few hundred caches like that in the province. However, by archiving them they go poof. You must be mistaken in what you have seen? Shh we are not suppose to talk about this. Just pretend you didn’t read this 😉

Don’t worry I won’t bring up my solution. As I was told no body cares about this and its not a gc.com cover up.

  • Last year I found a cache on a covered bridge. In my log I indicated that there had once been a cache about 30 meters away in the woods that we had found back in 2004. Another cacher read my log, went through our list finds for 2004 and got the coords for the archived cache. He then found and logged the archived cache.

I told this funny story to another cacher. He laughed and then went and got the coords and also found and logged the cache. I plan on retreiving the cache this summer.

Looks like someone I know did this to find one of my caches still waiting to be approved. They checked Zonker’s archived listings for the cache I found of his and re-published but not yet approved. So this trick can be used to find a new cache as well as an old one.

I also went in to do maintenance on one of my caches that they could not find the yesterday to find out that they had since found it and it was moved about 5 feet away, even the velcro I had placed on a tree to attach the container on was moved to a new tree, I guess they liked that tree better than the one I picked. 😛

I have changed the hint and write up for the cache.
