Explore caches at random on Cache Up NB
In an effort to bring a few different things to the table here on Cache Up NB, I added a little sidebar widget to the right hand side of our site. This widget, called “Random NB Geocache” is exactly what it says. It randomly pulls the name of a geocache located within the New Brunswick borders and then displays the various information about the cache to anyone viewing the website.
The mini-cache listing displays the type of cache via the cache icon, the name of the cache, size, difficulty, terrain, owner name, and the GC code. You can click on the name or code of the cache and it will bring up the official listing on Geocaching.com.
The mini-listing is pulled at random from a master list of more than 4,800 caches within the province of New Brunswick. The list was compiled by generating pocket queries of 1,000 caches at the center of Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, Woodstock, Edmundston, Miramichi, and Sackville with a distance range of 100 miles. Now this may not cover every last square inch of the province, but it does cover quite a bit of territory so the bulk of the caches in our province are in the list. The list was generated yesterday. The list does not include archived caches.
A lot of people get used to seeing caches from their own area so I thought this was a good way to expose caches from other parts of our region to our readers. My intention is to hopefully update the master data file on a regular basis so newer caches are included. Hope you enjoy.
Neat, what a great idea. We really notice and appreciate all the work you put into this site, cheers, CD
I agree with CD…great idea!
I agree as well. This is a nice addition, keep up the good work. We were at the Miramichi flash mob event on Saturday and made sure to let them know about your site.
Neat! which Widget is that? I was looking for one to do something slightly similar..
nm, just made one 🙂 heh, neat idea dude, if you’d like I can show you a way to automate grabbing an entire province.
Be aware though, technically databasing any of gc.com’s content (ie, caches) is a strict violation of their EUA.. might not want to say you’re databasing it 😉
