Fredericton gets their own Wherigo cache

Well it seems that finally someone else in New Brunswick has put out a Wherigo geocache! After having three hidden within the city of Moncton alone, Fredericton finally got their own. Cacher coopsquared put together an excellent Wherigo adventure in Odell Park. The cartridge is currently available for download but I did not see the actual geocache listing online yet, but I assume that it is pending approval from the reviewers.

The cartridge is named “Save Princess Peach” and I took a sneak peek at it through the Wherigo developer tools and I got a lot of good smiles out of it and am very impressed. I can’t wait to try this out during my next visit to Fredericton.

For those of you who may have been interested in trying out the building of Wherigo cartridges, there are now some other builders available out there. I believe coopsquared actually used the Earwigo builder which is a web based builder application. I think it might actually be easier to use than the one GSP provides (which is notoriously unstable). I plan to try this out in some degree when I get a chance to build my next Wherigo.

Also, speaking of Wherigo’s, I know that some folks have had issues with Wherigo cartridges crashing their Oregon GPS units. This is a common problem which the Earwigo builder apparently will warn you about. For my own Jacob’s Bridge cartridge, I recently re-built it to fix the crash issue and since I own an Oregon 550, I went out and tested it and it now works flawlessly on this platform.

It would seem now that there are some other options for building these kinds of caches, we may see more and more of them pop up.

Great work coopsquared!

I had the chance to complete Coopsquared’s new Wherigo this past weekend, and I have to say, it is of excellent quality and tons of fun to do. I also have the Oregon, and had no problems at all.

I am hoping to see a few more of these pop up in the future.

At our monthly breakfast yesterday, Coop also mentionned that he would be willing to put on an info session to teach other people how to create the wherigo caches, and assist anyone who needed help with writting the code. I guess he wants other people to hide some so he can find them too 🙂

Awesome! It’s nice to have more Whereigos around. They’re a fun variation in geocaching. Coopsquared is going to get a lot of logs, I’m sure. Next visit to Freddie, I’ll make sure I do it.

I find them using my BlackBerry using a program called openWIG. It takes a bit more time for the stages to open than a colorado or oregon but only by a few seconds.

  • Thanks for the heads up Rev. I don’t have a BlackBerry either so i’ll have to wait until I upgrade my GPS i guess.

..maybe form up a group and do it with some other cachers…. we did that here in
Moncton, and I know it was much appreciated.
Last year at Rev Slippery’s Irishtown Park event he and some others took groups around to do the Wherigos. I know that would work in Fredericton.

  • That could be an alternative as well. Thanks for the comment, I will look into that. I have never done any Whereigo and would like to see how it works.

  • I actually really like what coopsquared did in that he took a group out together after a local event and showed them the whole thing.\

Might be an idea for an event locally. Get a new Wherigo put together then have an event as an “intro” to Wherigo where folks learn how it works, and then go out and find the new one.

    Thoughts?

I’d be the first one to attend your event Zor. This wherigo thing sounds fun to me, but I am a bit dumb with computers and stuff(Computers and electronics hate me, and I hate them), so I never tried a Wherigo cache. I am sometime amazed that I can use a GPS! (I ain’t that bad)

Let’s do it, Zor. We can coordinate a time, post an event when I’m not working , and I’ll come out with my Oregon.

  • I’ll send you an email Zonker. I have an idea of a place we can have this that might work pretty good.

  • That would be really nice. If I’m in the area at the given time, I would take part of it for sure! It must be really fun doing as part of a group. I’ll keep looking for developments 😉

I have one started maybe if I finish it in time we can use it. I will find out about a place and time and Coordinate with the Z’s (Zor and Zonker)

Time is short to submit a request but perhaps Sunday, Aug. 8, the day after Zor’s Amazing Race. I expect that there could be a lot of people from outside the city so this would be a great add-on.

  • I like that idea but I think because of the venue we’re looking at it would have to be later in the month, probably towards the end.

Coopsquared’s Whireo cache finally got approved and published!
