Fundy National Park 2010 Event-Coin is non-trackable!

I’m not sure everyone is aware of this.  We have been raising the issue on the ACGA forum as well as our Fredericton Geocachers page on Facebook.  We just found out that the coin this year for the FNP event is going to be non-trackable; major bummer.  Their reason I got: “We wanted to have more coins available this year”.

Although this is probably a ploy to get more cachers to the event, and more coming back to complete the challenge (and paying park fees again), I see this backfiring.  There is no incentive for me to to go all-out to complete the series on the event day, and I really don’t see making a special trip back to complete it.

As far as I’m concerned, this is really disappointing, and almost a step backwards from the event last year.

Thoughts?

Trackable or not, I’m more concerned with how the coin looks. As a reformed coin addict, I still appreciate a nice coin – tracking number or no. Plus, our boys were super proud to earn their own coins last year (at age 7 and 5)and could care a less about it’s trackability. So, I’m on the – “wow, a coin for doing some awesome caches on incredible trails? what a bonus!!” side of the argument

I like the idea that a coin is trackable but I only have one coin that is circulating and I had no choice in the matter it was a condition when I bought it. All my other coins are sitting in a container doing nothing, some I didn’t even activate. I guess I am looking at it the same as Paul, I get a coin for doing some caches, it is a keepsake to remind me of the fun I had earning it and not going to be sent off to get lost.

Got our coins today and we LOVE,LOVE,LOVE them!! Each of the three coins are special for how much you work to get them – I’m not sure which I like best – but I know I love them all.

  • To us, the geocoin not being trackable is a bit of a bummer. We are not collectors or anything, therefore no real incentive for getting it. We strongly believe in the main purpose of geocoins and TBs: Travel from cache to cache for cachers to discover, and for the fun of seeing where the trackables go etc. Each time we get one, we take the time to check the places it visited, the pictures, etc and it’s kinda neat to “visit” other places around the world.
The down side of sending geocoins out there is that they can get lost. And get lost they do. I’d say at least half of the coins and TB we sent have gone missing (stolen, just lost by cachers with maybe low caching etiquette, or just lost because of misfortune). But that doesn’t stop us from sending our trackables out there, some have successful long journey and it’s very cool to follow their adventures.
That being said, we still have to say that this year’s coin, although not trackable, is a very beautiful coin. We can totally see why some collectors would love it. We will most likely return to the Park for the rest of this year’s caches, as we love geocaching, and the Fundy Park trails … but we will not bother to get the passport punched for the coin. This somewhat joining ForestFauna’s thoughts.
But that is us, and it’s something else for others and that is fine 😉 (Although we would like to encourage people to send their coin out there in the wild, it’s always very fun for a cacher to find one in a cache)
