I hid a Munzee

What is a Munzee you ask and then why do I care.

A Munzee is a new smart phone game that involves hiding a bar code that you create and print and them someone using a smart phone and the free Munzee app to go find it and scan it. It is similar to Geocaching in a hide and seek kind of way but it is automatic when you scan it. It logs the find right away and then adds the points to your profile. In order to play there has to be cell phone coverage to hid it and to find it, it gets activated as soon as you scan it in place, no approval. The guidelines for hiding are similar to Geocaching except for the distance rules. They are promoting it as a way for some businesses to advertise so maybe they are allowing the distance to be less to accommodate all places but they encourage having some distance and not plastering them everywhere.

I think it is just something else to keep us entertained with our phones and a way to pass on some information about as place, business or anything your want to promote. I like finding new things to do and love using new technology. It isn’t meant to compete or replace Geocaching, they even suggest putting the codes into your existing caches for an added bonus. It is free and like Wherigos it is somewhat interactive but not very diverse it seems that there is still no way to put in hints or terrain rating and if they can come up with the ability to get more info when scanned other than the listing it won’t be that much fun. They admit it has short comings but they wanted to deploy it for testing and they are finding bugs and getting feedback in order to make it better. I think I will print off a bunch and put them out to see how it works but I am not expecting much from it.

I also realize that many of you will not like it and not play because you don’t have a smartphone or just don’t want to but for those who do, why not join me at www.munzee.com and get printing.

  • I checked the map and Zonker hid one as well, I told him about it earlier this evening so just before I went to work I found it, pretty simple to do. It is still very bare bones but it is kinda neat.

  • Are you doing traditional cache containers or the laminated cards? The cards sound interesting to me as their are different from our regular game.

  • I did one pseudo-laminated card stuck to an electrical box, and one guardrail micro in a 35 mm can. I agree with you FreddyBeach, I’m going to try to use cards and signs where I can, and I might “piggyback” a few in existing geocaches. I think business owners might like these in their windows. They’re unobtrusive, and they attract people.

  • I have some very good baggies (thick) and I am wrapping them in clear packing tape to “laminate” them, should stay nice and dry. Going to put a few out today.

  • Now to get a smartphone that is compatible and for the app to cache the images for connection later.

  • Put out 3 more and have a couple more ready to go. I created 5 last night printed them off and then made them all ready to be hidden. I just took them out and deployed them and came home after to update the listing with the details. I think I will always keep a few on hand ready to go so I can hide when ever I find a good spot.

  • Is is imperative to have the back part of the Munzee game piece available for reading or can one just glue the sucker on to something (thus the back part would be glued down)?

  • I have the back or explanation part showing on all of mine except for the one I put on the windshield of my truck. Don’t know if I can make a moving one but I did.

  • I have just discovered cell phones lately (mine is in a suitcase, has a dial, and requires a 20′ antenna on my truck, so I dont think it Munzees)and I have hard time operating a GPS, so I am not sure this is for me. Besides, Munzee only reminds me of a pole dancer at the Lady Mary-Ann (used to be run by the Rock Machines I believe) when I lived in Quebec City (I’ll have to check if this place still exists, It was on Charest towards la basse ville, but I think they renamed Charest blvd lately).

  • I will hide a Munzee in Sackville tomorrow. I had to remove the one from my truck, you have to be within 1000ft of the coords for the scan to work.

  • Heads up!

We have been given guidance by Groundspeak (who own geocaching.com) that Munzee cannot be mentioned on the cache page as it is a competitive listing site. If you want to know why Groundspeak have made this decision, then I suggest you drop them an email and ask.

  • Crap, is the Munzee site down for anyone else?

I set one out yesterday, used my trusty GPSr to get good coords then came home to deploy it only to find out what the proper way of deploying it is – D’oh! I assume that all the QR codes are random and are only assigned to hides once the Munzee is deployed; is this correct?

  • I can’t get in online or with the app. yes, they must be random until deployed because I made a bunch at once and then went out to deploy them after.

  • Cool, I emailed them about their down time and they emailed right back! Gotta love start ups. Their ISP is a problem, they expect to be up later this afternoon.

  • Now to find a cheap way to laminate. Checking my office

At the $ Store I buy peel and stick laminate covers for luggage tags etc. 10 for a $, any help?

  • Yep that should do, thanks. My next problem is getting my phone’s GPS and the Munzee app to play nice; can’t seem to get the ‘below 1,000’ accuracy threshold in order to deploy. I’ll be on their forums.

  • Once you deploy it you can come home and move the pin on the google map if it appears to be off. I found that my phone was getting 10-20 meter accuracy at best and with google maps I could move the pin to the exact spot I placed it. Also it is good to give a hint as it is hard to navigate to them using the navigation map on the phone.

  • That’s my problem – I can’t deploy it from the field, I never seem to get the red dot to turn to green which means that my “accuracy” is within their threshold. My phone (HTC Magic) has a great GPS which has done me well for the first 350 caches I found. Perhaps it’s related to the ongoing site issues they are having. The app always shows that I have no sats locked. I’ll try again later.

      • The app doesn’t want to recognize my GPS, I may be out of this game :-(.
I’ll try posting in their forums for a resolution. Believe me I’ve tried several times to get my Munzee deployed. I have the exact coords from my prior GPS outing but no way to use them until the app allows the deployment. Warning – the “cache” is really basic and not exciting.

  • Well my problem got rectified – good community there, the guys are really hands on. I’ll start deploying today.

  • Hey, anyone looking to laminate these code boxes, look no further than Dollarama, where a pack of 4 laminates is a buck.

  • Rev Slippery placed Sackville’s first Munzee today. As usual, Nova Scotia is slow out of the blocks with a grand total of er, um, zero.

  • You guys are rockig it in the greater Moncton area. I’m going on vacation in PEI next week and there’s none there. Of course there are no guidelines on living near a Munzee sooooooo….. 😉

  • Logged my first Munzee today, used a buddies phone as my older iPhone isn’t compatible with the Munzee app.

  • Hmmm…I’m think that it may be better to perhaps start a Facebook fan page for NB Munzeers instead of bumping this thread all the time. Would anyone here join in?

  • Well, there are over 100 now in New Brunswick, and 5 in Nova Scotia that I placed. NS was slow out of the blocks with geocaching too. Why is it that Nova Scotia always seems a little behind…

  • Is Munzee dead in Moncton?
I have noticed that it has been weeks since new munzees popped up in Moncton.
Have the folks already given up on it?

  • Its growing quite nicely around Saint John.
I’ve been playing it and Im having alot more fun with it than with GC.
Its even better putting them out than actually find them. LOL

Dont give up on it yet, its only starting.

  • I think it is cool and I do like it but like Waymarking, Terracaching, Opencaching or any others that may come up I tried them and said “meh”. I have only so much time to give and I still enjoy geocaching too much.
