Ice Walk planning

I noticed a few people were trying to coordinate meeting others for the day of the Ice Walk and I thought it might be easier to make a post about it and keep it all in one place. I think the best way to do this is to have people reply to the comment for each area and if an area is not covered then make a new comment for the different area. I can try to keep a list on this post as people reply. My guess is most people are either going to Shediac Island, Cocagne Island, Bouctouche song series or maybe to nearby Irishtown are to do Cableguy’s new caches. I will make 4 comments below and you can reply to the one you plan on doing that morning. We will work out the times and any other details below as well. I will add the names to the list below once the cachers make their comments.

Shediac Island

Cableguy, Paulie. Nijajedi, Lexamazoo and friends

Cocgane Island

Triple ccc, Globuf, Perks19, Belladan, Mr Chignecto Duo, E.B.E.51, Ms. Army of two

  • I most likely will be doing the left side of Shediac Island, as I did the right side last year. But open to Cocagne Island.
Cocagne Island seems quite a longer hike?

Oh, and check out my video of last year’s event! http://youtu.be/ISMZrokefQ0

  • I will be caching one of the islands, just not sure which one yet. I did the south side of Shediac Island last year. I am leaning toward Cocagne island this year. Will not know for sure till Thursday.
Looking at the weather conditions for event day, also a few days before. Too much fresh snow will make it harder and slower to move. Easy to walk packed snowmobile trails, not easy with deep powder. It’s about 12km around Cocagne island by the look of it. That will take some time and effort to do the whole island.
I see that except for a few cachers that were there hiding caches this year and two cachers that were there last year, this island has not seen any cachers for an ice walk event since 2009. May be time to change that.
Also because the safe ice conditions vary from year to year, I think it’s an idea to take advantage of it. I can do the Bouctouche Song series any time but can’t get to the island any time. Just a personal preference there.
We’ll see Thursday if I decide to punish myself with a potentially long and grueling day.

  • I am planning Cocgane Island. I have not decided whether yet if I am doing the whole thing. Am open to any partners.

  • My plan is Shediac island, but if everyone is going to Cocagne island then I could be persuaded to go there instead.

  • Unfortunately I’m working that day, hopefully I will get out to the event for a little while. I’m planning on doing Cocagne Island tomorrow.

  • I will not be doing any caching at the event this year. My plan is to come out to the actual event and mingle with the folks who are there.

  • Just wondering about the parking for Cocgane island. It looks to be on Surette Road at N 46° 22.769 W 064° 36.724. Anyone know how much room is on this road to park and be out of the way?

    • Surette street is wide enough for people to park on the right side, as we have always done. For shediac Island the parking on Edgewater would be the same, with parking on one side of the street.

We always recommend that people show up at the event site and get together with others for carpooling. This is also a good idea for safety reasons as cachers go out in groups

  • I like the idea of doing the song series because it can be organized to be a one way walk. By the time I get there from Fredericton, I will likely join whoever hasn’t left yet!!

  • I’ve already “smilied” everything on Shediac Island so I will most likely head to Cocagne. I plan on heading to the event site though first.

  • Depending on my arrival time from Fredericton (9-9:30am), I am looking at either Cocagne Island or the Bouctouche song series. I will likely do the song series and hopefully team up with someone to park a vehicle at either end.

    • I like that idea but with all the sickness in my house this winter, I don’t know if I have the legs to walk the entire distance. Maybe we can get a vehicle parked half way too. Does anyone know the distance?

  • If you dont mind moving vehicles a little, it can be done in 3 sections. The map will show you the roads to park.

  • Me and Lex will be doing Shediac Island. Bringing a few rookie cachers with us as well to their first event.

Looking forward to this one for a while.

  • Looks like I will do Cocgane island. Probably start by parking on Surette Street and walk across to “First Cache on Cocagne Island” – GC10RAR. Then head North ( left ) and get the caches on that side. I don’t think anyone is crazy enough to want to do the whole island like I was going to do.
I’ll be at the event site at NOTRE CENTRE about 8:30am to 9am. Can meet up with anyone there to head out. Well that’s the plan so far. Just to let you know, I move quick, so try to keep up.

  • SATURDAY MORNING
If interested in carpooling and/or finding caching partners, check CacheupNB or show up at NOTRE CENTRE to meet other cachers, before heading out . Also, come in and say hello and get a cup of coffee or tea.

  • I (one of two, that being savannaha if your wondering :)) will be going out, I plan to do cocagne island and hope to get them all done this year. we did all of shediac island last year. Unfortunately the three people who were suppoose to come (my other half being one) have to either work or have other plans. I hope to be at the notre center by 830-9am, I usually go to the market in the morning in moncton on saturdays. Depending on traffic i should be there by (. I guess i shall see who is there other wise I shall enjoy my solitude until i meet up with all you lovely people 🙂 see you there!

  • Glad to see quite a few have opted for Cocagne Island…. will be at centre between 8:30 -900 to car pool….. looking forward to a great day..
