Pa's Caching Tales

July 3 – More news

As usual I will ramble on about a bunch of stuff

The Movie Madness puzzle cache is scheduled to be archived. http://coord.info/GCVWFJ

Tomorrow morning at 6:30 am we will be out there claiming the cache before it gets archived. Why 6:30? Well it is a busy area with lots of traffic so we want to get it easily. Also we want to get to the Casino for early breakfast. Tomorrow is the day we get our streak to day #100.

We put out more caches this weekend and now are at around 35 since end of May. Latest is near a parking lot that gets you to one of the best caches and cache locations in Moncton. Enchanted Passage Among the Pines by Argus2 http://coord.info/GCMDAC . That cache is situated in a growth of pines that were planted about 60 years ago by Boy Scouts. The usual trail to the cache is overgrown and underwater in spots so we took an alternate route and are placing a cache near the parking spot.

**********************************************

Who are all these cachers? Everytime I turn around, one of our caches gets found by somebody new. But when I check they have hundreds of found caches. There are so many caches in and around Moncton that they can be out there caching without me hearing about them. There are also a large number of cachers around the area who have been caching for a while but we have not had a chance to meet either because they have not attended any events or because we havent hit the same events.

Some of thee cachers have been really active. For example châtelaine and herrminnz have only been caching since January and already have over 650 caches. What is interesting is that they recently did our Scoudouc series of 14 caches and châtelaine had a detailed original log for each cache. Very impressive. I have never seen that before.

There are also quite a few new cachers around the Shediac and Cap Pele area who have been very active, some placing some nice caches. One of them has been in touch with us about gps units. I am not sure of locations, but I am thinking of cachers like NBhikers, bikercamper, WJBalsor, coco213, bridgedwellers, Capeballer, noco2, jenny cache

I noticed some cachers by their logs on our ML caches. cachers such as garn430, M.Hawkins, StCar. We met Stcar at an event.

I hate singling out any one, but we have been impressed with the caches by cableguy who has not appropriated one area, but has been placing caches in many interesting places, all over the area.

Two newer cachers that we have met are Saulba and WayMoreJean who I believe have more than 800 caches. We met saulba a year or so ago at a CITO event in Mapleton Park and spent some time touring the park with her and her mother. Our meeting with her brother WayMoreJean was more interesting. We met him before he began caching. We were looking for a cache at a dam in the Riverside Albert area, trying to not be too obvious to a muggle couple who were there. They showed an interest in what we were doing and we said we were geocaching. He said :”you must be Ma & Pa”. We were surprised, but he explained that he was saulba’s brother and that she had mentioned us. Not long after, we saw that he was out caching with his sister. I believe they cache with their mother.

  • lol your right we do cache together all the time , and we are really enjoying it we have to thank FraJan from NS for interducing it to us . we have met a few cacher along the way . some that we will never forget lol MA&PA !

  • Nice to see you here saulba. Glad to see you are enjoying this obsession. Hope to see you at an event soon, although we will be away hiking and caching for a few weeks.

    • Thanks Pa& Tetagoucher it a great site ! I dont want to sound stupid 1 but can you tell me how I made it to the top 100 list lol! I have sooo much to learn

  • Pa are the new caches you hid in Irishtown park? The city contacted me this past week to put some new caches in there for them. The reviewers are not supposed to allow caches in there but they have let 3 go in lately.

    • Only one of our caches is there. It is about 25 meters along the trail from the parking lot that is a lttle north of tankville school. Hopefully it isnt a problem.

  • Pa you are right, Chatelaine is certainly raising the bar for “logging etiquette”. I like to read her log very much. I mean how can she remembers them all???? We were looking for one of your caches along the scoudooc train track the evening and noticed that there was a long and different log for each (you will not get this from me tonight, sorry). I like to follow her adventure very much, I hope HerrMinz will not get jealous 😉

  • I have mentioned to Pa that I really enjoy the walk along the Scoudouc railbed. I have done it more than once and now I see I get to do to yet again. I have a new camera so maybe a new pic or two.
We haven’t put anything new out, but have put a lot of time in fixing existing caches up. We are enjoying all the logs we receive from tourists and local alike.

  • Yeah, this scoudouc trail is awesome and a nice view when you get to the missing bridge. I believe it was my forth time before I finished it all. I did 2 on June 13, 2010; 2 on June 19, 2010; Incepit’s section on March 25th 2011; and finally the rest yesterday. At the last wings event HerrMinz had a good laugh at me never finishing the trails in just one shot. With this one and Tiger’s Dieppe Trail where I went probably 5 times or something, he called me a whimp. I am keeping an eye on his stats now and if I find that he doesnt finish a series in one day I will have my revenge 🙂 Hear that FrauMinz? 🙂

As mentioned above, we went out this morning at 6:30 to the movie madness cache. We met up with Belladan to do it.

The cache page indicated that it was about to be archived by cache agent so we wanted to get it. If you read our log you will see that the cache was located in the marshy area in the middle of the busy traffic circle next to Champlain Mall. We parked in the mall parking lot as no parking is available on the roads. We then had to cross two lanes of traffic in two different places. Traffic was not too bad at that time but we had to be very careful. It would likely be dangerous at other times of the day.

Once across the roads, we still had 180 meters to go through long grass in a marshy area, watching out for deep hidden ditches. In any event, we located the cache. We removed the cache both because it was to be archived and because of the cache location.

Ma and I then headed to the Casino for the breakfast special. As I have said many times before the Monday buffet is $2.99 for members. As seniors they also give us $5 for the machines. This time we won a total of $60. So far we have won over $260, with the free coupons they have given us. We have never used any of our own money. We are not promoting the Casino, we simply use their money and leave before our winnings start to drop.

After leaving the Casino, we went to Riverview to pick up the beautiful coin we had earned for finding the 6 Sunfest caches.

I hid a cache overlooking the Scoudouc River at the end of the scoudouc trail on the old railbed. The cache was originally refused because there was another cache across the river less than 160 meters away. We thoght the river would allow the cache to be approved but it seems that the rule may have changed (I am not certain).

In any event, I placed a detailed explanation of the situation in the Note to Reviewer section and cache-tech approved the cache. I sent him a note thanking him.

The cache reviewers are volunteers doing a difficult job. They have a lot of work to do for all of us and sometimes have to deal with difficult situations. They have to review caches and approve them using GC.com rules and guidelines that are not that clear. I have always had a good relationship with cache tech and cache agent and we have cooperated to help each other.
