Mentoring a newbie

I was sitting in a local coffee shop (not Tim’s) with a friend and we were discussing Google Street view and I mentioned Tiger Tracker’s new Cache that uses Street view to get the clues to solve a Geocache. He said that he would like to go find one with  me someday, I had told him about it a few weeks before. I then told him that the closest one was one of mine which I needed to go check on a wet log problem. He then pulled out his Iphone and downloaded the Geocaching app which allowed him to find one Geocache for free. We went out in my truck and found my cache 5 minutes later and he said “this is really cool, are there any more nearby we can find?”  We drove to another cache that I knew would be easy to find since we were not dressed to cache and had shoes on. Before we got to the next cache my Blackberry received an email from him logging the find we had 3 minutes ago, his first find! When we got to the next cache I asked him how he was going to find it if he could only find one for free, he told me not to worry he had purchased the Geocaching App while we were driving to the second cache!! I guess he likes it, I thought. We found the second one and he learned how to be stealthy as there were many muggles around. We are now going out tomorrow morning to find a bunch on the Dobson trail and then heading to Damascus Coffee shop with our laptops so I can show him how it all works and log our finds. He is the first person that I can say I was personally responsible for getting hooked on this. He is going home to visit family in England for a bit so he wants to be ready to find a bunch while in the UK. I may send a TB or Coin for him to release for me over yonder. So if you get a find log from Nibi786 it’s my fault.

Do any of you have a story to tell about how someone got you started or how you got someone else “hooked”?

  • I have not had the chance yet to bring someone new to the sport out yet. Looking forward to having the opportunity.

  • I once introduced Jim to caching. But he will deny it.

BTW why did I have to click on this item in order to see who wrote it.

If I had known, I might not have read it.
