Moncton’s Race for Cache – A Unique Upcoming Event

I’m not one to typically use CUNB as a means to self-promote my own caches or events but today, I’m making an exception.

On August 13th, 2011, I will be hosting the 4th annual Moncton’s Race for Cache geocaching event. This is an annual event that takes teams of geocachers and pits them against each other in a unique race around the city of Moncton.

Teams start at Bore Park at are given a clue which will lead them to another clue which leads them to another clue and so on. Each clue they find is either hidden in a typical geocache container, or is obtained by solving clues or performing a specific task.

In the past, teams have had to drive go-karts, play video games, shoot baskets, count lights, and even eat/drink the occasional item. While out and about doing the race, teams can also score additional points by snapping photos of various items found on a “snapshots” list. Each snapshot is worth a certain amount of points and are added to the team’s total score.

When teams cross the finish line, they are scored based on how quickly they completed the race, and other specifics. The team with the highest score is crowned the winner.

The finish line has a free for all BBQ potluck where drinks, hotdogs, and hamburgers are served to everyone. There are also door prizes for cachers who run the race, three trophies (winner, first to finish, most honest score), a 50/50 draw, and a great deal of fun for all who participate.

Even if you are not interested in running the race, you are still welcome to attend the BBQ.

Last year’s race saw over 100 people attend and I’d love to see us hit higher than that this year.

If you are interested in more information about this year’s race, please check out the official race website at www.monctonsraceforcache.com. You can also find the official geocaching.com listing here.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask!

I can’t wait to see you there!

  • Zor, why not use this site to promote your Race – the rest of us use it to communicate about our special events or contests and we also look to this site for info on said events/contests. It’s not self-promoting at all, it’s simply getting information and reminders out to the cachers who benefit from that info – part of the reason you started CUNB. 🙂

Your Race is one of the premier events that happen annually in NB and deserves to be heavily promoted!

Still not sure if we’ll make the race but hope to at least get to the BBQ!

  • It’s very hard for me to convey the sort of battle I fight with the use of CUNB when it comes to events I host and caches I hide. it’s very much like there’s “Zor the cacher” and “Zor the CUNB admin/founder”.

“Zor the cacher” is just a regular cacher like everyone else who hides, finds, and does events. “Zor the CUNB admin/founder” is one of the guys who administers this site, and publishes material that he deems appropriate for the site.

There’s a part of me that doesn’t like having Zor the admin promote stuff that Zor the cacher does because it may come across as favoritism even though I know what you are saying is true. Someone could in turn come around and say that Zor is posting news items about his own events but not promoting other ones as heavily. It’s that sort of thing that I want to avoid. I’m relatively sure no one would view it that way (as you point out) but I tend to be a lot more cautious about these things than perhaps I need to be.

I’m flattered that you view the race as one of our premier events, and although I know it tends to draw big crowds, I tend to view it (personally) on the same level as many other events in the province, and not something that should be promoted any more/less than others.

That being said, I do have to admit that I do tend to do more advertising about the race than any other event I host.

I really think it’s more of me being a bit extra-humble about things but that’s typically how I tend to view things like this.

Not sure if any of that makes sense 🙂

  • A few follow ups on this…

There are only a few days left before the big race. We have 28 teams registered so far which matches our team count from last year. If you are planning on coming and have not registered a team yet, now is the time to do it. If you haven’t registered a team yet because you don’t know if you can make the race and might only make it to the BBQ, register a team anyway so that you have a slot reserved. Registration can be found at http://monctonsraceforcache.com/registration/ and the GC event listing is at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=300da073-ce01-4d80-aaea-403371f98b57

We have received some great donations for door prizes, including some stuff from Groundspeak directly. There was a bit of press for the event in the Times Transcript (http://timestranscript.canadaeast.com/news/article/1428015) and we might have a bit more of that coming up this week so I’ll keep you posted.

I know there are still cachers out there who have said they intend/want to come but have not registered a team yet so if you are coming, please register.

  • We had hoped to attend the BBQ event but won’t be able to. 🙁 My sister, eebee, and kayakerinme are coming to Freddy this weekend and we’re celebrating their engagement. 🙂
