New Events Calendar Added

While working on another website project, I came across a new calendar feature for WordPress (the software that powers this site). After tinkering with it for awhile, I decided that I think this calendar list works much better than the old one. It will take a bit of getting used to as far as how folks add events into the calendar, but I think the benefits are pretty nice.

In case you didn’t notice it before, below the update and comments list, there’s actually a list of upcoming geocaching events within New Brunswick, and any other notable events that NB cachers might be interested in. You’ll now see the name of the event, date, time, and even the coords to the location. If you click on the event, it brings you to some more information about the event, including a link to the official geocache listing. There’s also a handy link for Google Maps which shows you exactly where the event is taking place.

However, it doesn’t end there…

Whether you realized it or not, you’ve always been able to click the Calendar option from our nav menu at the top, and get a full month display of events. That still exists but now has better navigation, more information when you hover over an event, and you can choose to also show the events as a list instead of a typical calendar view.

But it doesn’t end there either. If you’re someone who uses an online calendar such as Google Calendar, you can now download all of Cache Up NB’s calendar items by clicking on the ICS link on the calendar page. You can then import that ICS file into any calendar that you currently use whether it’s Outlook, Google, or any other one.

Lastly, in moving forward, you may start to see events posted as full blown items on the main page. This will bring more awareness about events going on within our province. Now, I know we have a lot of monthly events that occur frequently, so we’ll play it by ear on whether or not those get cycled into the main mix of news you read, or if they’ll just stick to the calendar. It’s a bit of a work in progress but definitely something new to look at.
