Southeast New Brunswick group hikes

Is there any interest among local cachers in doing some group hikes? We could cover some longer trails… for example, legs of the Dobson trail, some of the rails to trails caches, or some of the wilder areas towards Sackville…We could hike the Sussex bluffs, or Shepody Mountain too.

It would be a good way to get newer cachers out to the wilder areas, and for those of us that have been to these places before, we can maintain existing caches, and maybe even place a few new ones.

Some of us have spouses that don’t like us out there alone in the woods, hiking as a group is a good way to address that concern.

Thoughts?

  • Even tho I live in the Northern part of NB, we visit the Moncton area about once every two months. It’s sure that I wouldn’t be able to attend the group hikes everytime they would occur but I would surely tag in for one if I happen to be in the area.

We’re in Moncton quite often, too, and would love to do some group hikes. Depending on the when/where we’re in. We’ve done part of the Dobson and the Parlee Brook Natural Amphitheatre but wouldn’t say we’re experienced hikers. So going with a group is very appealing!

This sounds very very interesting. What are the caches in that area? I know I have my eye on Jims52 Eye of the needle for a milestone cache, as well as GC14DPR At The Top Of 400 Foot Walton Glen Falls and GC14DBH Breathtaking Walton Glen Canyon. Dunno yet how much of a hike they are.
Where will you post the hike details, here I guess?

Is there going to be an Eye of the needle hike this year? I have missed it every other year and am looking forward to doing it one of these days.

  • Here is the parking spot to get the caches on Shepody mountain. the online maps show a road here but you will have trouble identifying a road at this location. It is essentially a track on the grass.

Here is the map showing the caches on and around the mountain. There are not that many caches but the hike is great and the views are fantastic. Chignecto Duo, Hillbilly Bob and KDCachers live in that area and could be helpful, as could Jim52 who knows that area very well

  • The outdoor Enthusiasts club is going to the eye of the needle on Sunday. It is not a geocaching event although the leader Dave Kane has done sme geocaching. If interested, check with Dave. Here is his information about the hike.

Update on the hike to the Eye of the Needle for Sunday, August 22nd. Important we are starting 1 hour earlier… The main road into Dustin Brook has been washed out. So we need to approach the Eye from a different road. This will add about 60-90 minutes to the hike. Most of the road has recently been graded and the driving is good. We need to meet at 8:30 at COC or 10:00 at Adair’s. On a side note, I found an under utilized trail that will make this trail a loop. However, the last section of the loop is steep and not groomed well. But the views are great (a large water fall, a huge recent rock slide and tall canyon walls). Those who want to try this new trail can, others can return by the same trail we came in. Hiking time should be 5-6 hours (not including breaks). Contact Dave at 875-5855

Tks for the info Pa. Those guys are quite an active bunch, I checked their internet site. Interesting. I will have to look into it. Sunday may be hard as I have a wedding in the Acadian Peninsula on Saturday night. 🙁

  • If you havent done the 5 new caches in Fundy Park here is your chance to do them. The Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts Club will be ding them on Sunday. The club always welcomes non members to participate in their events. They may even love to have real geocachers along. Well actually Ma and I will be going with them for the exercise, since we already found them all.

Here is the informationa about the hike. The reference to COC refers to the Centennial Park parking lot at the top of the hill on Saint George, across the street from Dickson blvd.

August 29, Sunday – Geocaching Hike in Fundy National Park will take in five Geocaches located in the park. If you visit all five, you can collect a Geo-Coin celebrating the parks 60th anniversary. The five hikes will total between 16 and 18 km. and are located in different trails. Hence, driving between them will take some time as well. I expect we will be done between 5 and 6 PM. I plan to be camping in Fundy National Park, so please meet me at Headquarters at 10 AM. You can meet at C.O.C. at 9 AM to car pool to Fundy Park. If you have any questions, please let me know. Contact Dave at 875-5855.
