The Vikings Trek to Proposal Falls

Viking43, and Mrs Viking are going to be making a trip to Proposal Falls on Saturday the 14th of May 2011 to find GC289A6 to mark  their 5000th geocache find.  This cache was placed on the 9th of May 2010 and has not been found, or to my knowledge, even looked for yet.  It would be nice for them to get the FTF as well!

Anyone interested in tagging along on this adventure is welcome.  We intend to meet in Sunny Corner at the Irving Convience Store at 10:15 am, with a planned departure time of 10:30 am for the 80 km drive to the falls.  Car pooling would be a good idea, the details of which you should have worked prior to arrival in Sunny Corner.   The Irving is at 1765 Hwy 425 and in the area of: N46 56.911, W065 48.974.   It will take approx 11/2 hours to reach the falls, and a 5km walk, round trip is likely.  The main road to within 6 kms of the falls should be in excellent shape, easily navigable by a car, and SUV’s/ 4X4’s may be able to go right to the listed final parking coords.  (The walk could be up to 12kms round trip if one of the roads is impassable to vechicles.)    Please refer to the cache listing for further details regarding terrain etc.   Bring a lunch with you, and cold water and soft drinks will be provided.

Please post a note on the cache listing page with how many persons if you are going to attend, or leave a comment on this post.

  • There is so many coincidences here for Di and I that I would just love to be part of this. The only thing is: Di is now 14 weeks pregnant and gets tired very easily so I am not sure if we’ll be joining or not! But I think that because of all the coincidences here and the name of this cache I have to tell you about MY proposal to Di that took place very very very close to that spot.

First of all, this cache you’re going for was placed on my 39th birthday, and yes I am 40 today. But here is the story of the proposal:
My wife’s father, who passed away not long before I met Di, was a salmon fishing enthusiast. He was part of a group that own a nice camp and the fishing right on a big stretch of the river, just a bit south of this cache. When he passed away, he was cremated and some of his ashes were spread in the pool where he caught his very first salmon (Guagus Pool). There is now a plaque there in his memory.

I am a bit of the old school type and I would have loved to ask him for his daughter’s hand before proposing to Di. Also, Di knew I would have liked to go where they spread his ashes one day but as this is a private organisation, it’s not as if we could just pop out there one day and say we’re here to go to the site of Kent’s ashes. She was to ask her mom to organise that for us one day, but it kinda fell in the crack and never happened. So when I decided I was going to propose, I asked for her mom’s permission first, and of course got it right of the bat. I took the opportunity at that moment to say, “Listen, the closer that I could get to ask your husband for his permission is to go there with Di and propose to her at that very spot, so could you arrange that for me?” Sure enough she did. So on September 8, two days before her father’s birthday, we headed for the fishing camp. I told her that if she remembers how much I would have liked to go there, well, that I organised it with her mom. She was very happy to go, but certainly not knowing what was going to happen. I had the ring in my pocket, and I had hidden a bottle of champagne below the ice in a cooler, and hidden two champagne flutes under the seat of her Jeep Liberty. My soul I was nervous. We stopped at the Sunny Corner Irving (where you will all meet up this coming weekend) to do what was her father’s ritual (all salmon fisherman’s ritual actually). We stopped to get beer as the minute you enter the dirt road to the camp, you have to pop a beer open (they actually all did when they went there to spread his ashes, including the minister I believe!). So at the Irving, while I was putting gas in, she went inside and bought a pop and water, and headed right for the cooler in the back!!!!!!! I stopped putting gas and ran there to do this for her! Just made it in time! So I went back in hoping she would not go for the cooler again, got a couple of beers and out we went.

We got to the main camp and the guys that were there knew about the story, so they had left that portion of the river just for us. We headed for the pool, and when we got there, I let Di go with her bare feet in the part of the stream where her father’s ashes were, and I stayed on the cliff above her, let her do her thing, closed my eyes and talked to her father just in my head. Then I went down to her, took her in my arms (both facing the river) and talked to her a bit about us and stuff. Then I said: I realise you said goodbye to a very important man in your life right here, how about welcoming another important man in your life right here as well? She quickly turned around and said wha? I said: You know, you said goodbye to your father here, how about welcome to your husband? Then I knelt before her, got the ring, and asked her to marry me. That was one Yes that I will forever remember! We stayed there a bit, took some pictures as I had of course the camera in my pocket, then went back to the Jeep, had champagne, and went back home where there was more surprises (I had organised with her friend to put Roses here and there in the house and that too had a significance but it’s too long to explain, kinda an inside thing).

So this area means a lot to us. We will seriously be contemplating heading out too, but not sure if we’ll be able to make it.

Have fun at the Proposal falls!

  • Sounds great. Not sure if we can make it though.

Nemo you tell a great story. One day I will ask DIDI for her version.

    • There will be these additions in her version: -Tears; -Me almost throwing up twice heading up there and blaming it on the beef jerky that I had gotten at the Fredericton Market on our way there(I had gum for the kiss); -more tears; our supper and the flower business; the big caterpillar we found on the trail (I wonder how I could post this picture, it was massive); did I mentioned tears? (Ladies like to put emphasis on that one, go figure!).
Here is a link to the same caterpillar we found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hyalophora_cecropia_caterpillar.jpg
It’s the largest North American moth, pretty cool!

  • Hey Nemodidi, that’s a great story about your Proposal! It gave me chills! So I think its right & proper that you try to make the trek. I would love to join allo of you, but my partner of 42 years just had a total knee replacement & I can’t leave her now! Enjoy! And make sure you take lots of pictures & a video for YouTube!
