To Roll or Fold?

The question of the century, how do you like your log sheets? Rolled or folded?

I prefer folded, it is much more compact and the finder only has to unfold the sheet a couple of times to find the next available space (except Paulandstacey and Zonker). Rolled sheets tend to frustrate me and then are a pain to roll back up. I also think that folded sheets last longer are there is much less stress on the paper and it is easier on the paper to be folded as opposed to being rolled in and out. Folded sheets are also easier on the bag as the bag tends to remain flat and not all bunched up to be shoved back in the container causing tears and make the “zip” part separate.

What are your thoughts on this dilemma?

  • This came up long ago. Funky was a big one for folding for the reasons that you mentioned. He also felt that the baggie should not be completely sealed, but instead have the top folded. He said this would allow damp logs to dry.

I usually try to fold, in fact I often fold log sheets in caches that I find.

The thing that bugs me the most about rolled logs is that the signed portion is rolled to the inside so that you have to unroll it completely. This is really frustrating in locations with many geocachers, where the log in micros consists in a large number of sheets stappled together and then rolled up. You have to unroll it to find a place to sign and then you discover that the sheet to sign is not the top one or the bottom one, and you have to check both sides of all the pages. After signing, I fold it, with my signature showing. AND of course I realize it is just an old man complaint

  • Is that possible that I do not mind one way or the other? Is that possible that I will not complain on this topic? I thought I’d never see that day 😉 Na, I have to say something.

I guess I practiced a lot of rollin’ in my rock’n’roll teen days (poor mom!), so I don’t mind rolling paper up. Having said that stupidity, I can now say more serious things.

We will all agree that some containers do not allow folding, so we will take those out of the equation. I hear your concerns as well as Pa’s and I get what you’re saying. To me, I’ve always tried to do what was best for the cache/log/content. Besides drying things up and do some maintenance, sometimes I will close up a log book properly if I am of the impression that closing the cover will increase its lifespan; I often make sure the opening of the bags is not facing up where water could get in; I tend to not put the pencil/pen in the log bag as it’s notorious to pierce it; before sealing the bag I take all air out so it fits better in the cache; I always make sure I am not jumping pages or sheets or lines so to leave enough space for others; I TAKE MY TIME, never rushing to make sure all is good. So if it’s a roller, I roll it; if it’s a folder, I fold it.

Have I always been doing this? Of course not, only with time I got a bit more careful or thoughtful or meticulous. And I am still learning, but always doing my best.

From this point in time, I might become a folder 🙂

Personally I prefer to fold than roll. Rolling is usually annoying having to roll them all the way out and then it tries to roll itself back up while im signing it. Folding is simple and straightforward. So unless its a military matchstick container which has no choice but be rolled its all about folding.

  • I like my log sheets folded in the shape of a crane with it’s wings extended, as it glides majestically over the pacific ocean as the set sets…

  • Never seem to be able to get them rolled up just the way they were, if the cache is an older one then the fold is easy, if it’s newer, I usually screw up the neat folds the owner made. Getting several layers of paper rolled and into a nano is enough to made the most patient person swear. Rolled or fold, makes no big difference.
