Pa's Caching Tales

Winter Caching

We may not do much caching in the next few weeks and it is because of the snow.

No, it’s not that we hate winter caching. We love winter caching. Since December we have found 365 caches and hid 45.  This year we have been over to Shediac Island twice, we went to Freddy for 4 days of caching in January, we did snowmobile trails in Dieppe, Scoudouc  and in Magnetic Hill area. We snowshoed to caches in Memramcook and we walked many a country lane to get caches. We spent a few hours in the woods with Chignecto Duo as they did one of our series in the Shediac area.

Caching is a good excuse to get  out of the house in winter. The exercise and fresh air will revitalize you and get you out of the winter blahs.  We sometimes need snow shoes to do a series of caches but often they are not necesary if  caches are on groomed snowmobile trails.  There is no traffic on these trails during the week and it is still safe on weekends if you move right off the trail when you hear a motor approaching.

So why will we be slowing down over the next few weeks?  Well, we love cross country skiing and this has not been a good year for snow and the ski trails. We have only been out about 20 times In Kouchibouguac and at the Beaver Ski Club here in Grande-Digue. So with this new snow we likely will spend many a day at the Beaver club which is only about 5 minutes from our place.

Another reason is that we do some snowshoeing.  On Sunday we will be leading an Outdoor Enthusiasts club event in Grande-Digue. So today we were out in the woods for 3 hours scouting a route. We will be doing the same on Saturday.

Now you may ask why arent we snowshoeing on Friday.  Well it happens that we are picking up Belladan in the morning and driving to  Riverside Albert area to pick up a caching series of Chignecto Duo.  And it seems that we may be stopping off at CD’s place for lunch. also.   Another possibility is going after Bernie the Travelling geocache who has been placed out that way, but it may be an 8 km hike to go and get him.

Oh and did I mention that during our snowshoeing on saturday, we will be replacing one of our caches on the Beaver trails.  Oh and we are working on Puzzle caches for the Saint John area.

Well I guess maybe we wont be getting too far from geocaching.

We hope you all get a chance to get out and enjoy the caching before the snow disappears

  • I know there are a lot of people who do a lot of caching in the winter, but I gotta say it is not something I am super keen on. I’m not a fan of the cold so that tends to keep me inside.

The biggest upside to caching this time of the year however is the complete lack of bugs. The last year or so it seems the bug count has been massive when caching in the woods.

  • Here is an update. We went to Albert County with Belladan to do the Midway series by Chignecto Duo.

We dropped in on CD at noon hour and Mrs CD served us lunch. Well I guess you could call it dinner. She served us a turkey feast with all the trimmings. It was incredible and delicious. You just gotta love geocaching.

A big thank you to CD and their two cats for the hospitality

As an adult, I’ve always disliked winter, the cold, the snow. Since taking up geocaching I’m warming up to it. We bought snowshoes last winter and had a few caching trips on the trails. This year, even though winter has been shorter than normal, we’ve been out several times and had a blast! We’ve had a few group caching jaunts and have really enjoyed them, too. As much as I’m looking forward to spring, for the first time in my life I wish winter would stick around a bit longer.

Because of geocaching, Terry and I have also taken up hiking, biking and snowshoeing….things, because of my asthma, I never thought I’d be able to do. Geocaching has really changed our lives…in all 4 seasons. 🙂

    • What a great post by Gwen of Milosheart. I hear so many comments like that from cachers. If it wasn’t for caching, they wouldnt be out in winter, or hiking trails, or taking an afternoon off to get out with friends, or having family outings…etc.
