Winter Slump

Man,  this has been one long winter ! But wait, there is still 6′ of snow on the ground and more forecast, this IS one long winter, still. We have managed to get out on the snow shoes a wee bit. OK, once. In our defense we’re remodeling the basement. Got a great Habs theme going on down there and yes I know, many of you are going to make the connection between Habs and basements. Trust me, we’ve heard them all.

We have not been caching. We have not read up on all the caching news. We have not updated GSAK, (thanks Jeff). We have not talked to fellow cachers save at the Ice Walk. MAJOR SLUMP. So, what can we do to get ourselves going? Is anyone else going through this? Are we caching toast?

I’m sure this is the longest we’ve gone without a find. Not even a parking lot grab while grocery shopping, nada.  We will get out there and enjoy some of this winter, we will take the time to go caching, we will .

Hmm, married with one adult daughter, 1 son in law, 2 granddaughters and 2 cats. We enjoy spending time at the beach, motorcycling and travelling , of course, we fit caching in when ever we can. One of us is a Maintenance Supervisor at the Hopewell Rocks and one of us is a Foot Care Nurse.

Tell me about it, I haven’t found a cache yet this year!

I have got out to find 93 so far this year. But it hasn’t been easy with the beating this winter has been giving us.The storms, the deep snow and the heavy snow cover in the trees make it super hard.Looking at this winter through the window has not made it too encouraging to venture outside. This is my second winter geocaching and I was looking foreward to caching and snowshoeing. Then mother nature went on a rampage.
But I have gotten a few thanks to a few snowmobile trails that were packed down.I have also gotten alot of snow down the back of my neck. And it’s a good thing that GPSr’s are waterproof.Hopefully the weather will finally take a break.

This is my first winter that I haven’t gone out to find much. It must be a combination of the deep snow, way to busy with the kids and I am not going out hiking with the Scout troop anymore. I remember going out snowshoeing with small groups of cachers and doing trails and getting 20+ a day and then grabbing a few around town. March is usually a good month for me but I am working a lot of overtime this month so It looks like I won’t get any too soon. I am gonna look up a few things about winter finding and hiding for the podcast we are recording today.

  • I found my first cache today since the Ice Walk, so a really slow winter so far. I was really hoping to get many more caches this winter but we haven’t been to the Moncton area often and all that snow didn’t help. I’m not too worried tho since there will only be more caches to be found this summer. I just can’t wait!

It seems like every time I have a day off or make plans, it is either a bad snowstorm or heavy rain (like today). I’ve definitely slowed down, but my efforts to try and complete my calendar (a cache every 366 days) has given me motivation this month, as March has a lot of gaps. I did, however, get out this past weekend on a gruelling expedition to Hollman Island on PEI, to help my buddies Coopsquared get the last of the caches they wanted to claim for the NB winter contest.

  • We did not get as many caches as usual this year, but that is only because it was a great year for x-country skiing and we went skiing at least 30 times, mostly at the Beaver club in Grande-Digue, but also in Kouchi.

We did all of Jim’s puzzle series, even one day when it was minus 35. We also did the series by Tiger Tracker in dieppe, and we were very pleased when the new series by the Cookers came out as it gave us a couple of afternoons walking snowmobile trails.

We just got into geocaching. So far we have gotten out to find 6. All very short walks but a good start. Looking forward to finding a lot more this spring and summer. It’s a lot of work in the winter.

Welcome in the geocaching world Jasper04. In no time you will find yourself in the same situation as all the bunch here: happily obsessed … that is if you are not there yet 😉
You should look at the geocaching events, it’s a good place to get to know the local cachers and to get good tips.
If you like wings, there is one tomorrow in Riverview. (Rev, you owe me for this plug)

  • Jasper, I think you’ll find that spring/summer caching is a pretty active time. I had a huge slump this year but I already have caching trips planned for April, May, June, and July, plus a big event in August. I mean, it’s not even the end of March and I have big caching plans made already.

I definitely think it’s a good idea to come to an event or two to meet the locals and get a feel for what the community is like.
