VIDEO: Mass Logging of Finds Using GSAK 8

For those who don’t know, my actual daytime job when I am not a geocacher is a technical trainer. I spend a lot of time training technical people on various things in the world of software for law firms. One of the things that has been in demand is online training. So, in order to be able to provide online training, I’m having to learn some of the tools used to create online training.

One of those tools is Adobe Captivate. It allows you to “record” things you do on your computer and then re-display them back to users with helpful hints and voice overs. Since I recently discovered how to use the Publish Logs feature in GSAK 8, I thought it would be a perfect chance to try and test out my new Captivate skills by creating a tutorial video.

Below is a five minute quick tutorial on how to use GSAK 8 for mass logging. This tutorial imp0rts a field note file from a GPS and then applies a generic log to all the finds, and uploads it to GC. It also shows you how to edit individual logs if you want to make changes, and how to include trackables in your log.

It’s not perfect, but it’s not bad for a first attempt in Adobe Captivate. Let me know your thoughts.

  • Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t need to use a template at all. You can in fact just edit each log individually and then use GSAK to publish them.

I see the template feature being handy when a person does a lot of copy and paste logs for large cache runs or powertrails. I imagine logging the ET Highway powertrail would be a lot easier with something like this than by hand.

I’m looking forward to trying this next weekend when a group of us head up to find the 200+ caches between Bathurst and Shippigan. This will be such a great time saver. Thanks for the video!

  • Used this for my last big caching run. 100+ caches logged in less than 5 minutes. Would have been really helpful for my Nevada trip. great video, thanks for the info.

  • Just watched the video. It was very clear and helpful. We played with GSAK and it was very easy. Good Job teacher.

I noticed the comment on You tube which suggests fetching dierectly from the GPS. Tried that and it also worked

  • We use GSAK quite a bit, especially when planning trips. MA always has GSAK turned on on her PC and is always checking stuff using GSAK rather than GC.com

We have a database of all the maritimes and use the polygon feature to grab the caches in an area we want to visit

The ability to access gc.com directly from GSAK to get the pocket queries is a time saver and a lot less confusing than the old way of doing it. Of course this access is what permits the mass logging. I also discovered another feature of GSAK that allows you to use a map to select caches in an area without using a pocket query.

I haavent used any macros yet,but that may come if a need arises to get something in particular

  • Tried this out today. Worked great. I have one question however. Is there a way to use the template feature and also maintain any comments that were input in the GPS when the find was made. I have one cache that I had inserted a comment and the template overwrote it. Thanks for putting this video together.
