Earthcaches – What’s your take?

Earthcaches are one of my favorite types of non-traditional cache types.

Why you ask?

Well it’s obvious they’re educational and fun at the same time.  Lately I’ve been researching the geology of our fair province in the hopes of learning more about the way it has developed and as such I’ve learned a lot. One of the great things about this sport is that I can pass along this knowledge to others through a medium that we all love. CACHES!!

One of the best things about geology is that when you get right down to it the earth has been here a long time and a lot of the landscape we see every day was millions of years in the making. And while some forms of geology we can see in action a lot of it will still look the same thousands of years down the road.  So learning about how something progressed over the years is the best thing about earthcaches in my opinion.

Please share your experiences of Earthcaches and why you like them also.

I like to learn about all kinds of different things, but I am not really a big enough geology fan to say that one of my favorite caches would be Earthcaches. I am not in love with them, but I don’t hate them either. I still think there is a place for them in geocaching. Personally I like when the cache page doesn’t require you to read a 5 page document or write an essay on a subject. If the topic is way too long to read or doesn’t interest me that much, or if I don’t feel like doing what is asked by the owner, I just leave them behind, no big deal. I still think that earth cache and virtuals should be owned by cachers that are in the area or that can prove they are or can be there often (like the regular caches), even if no maintenance is required: This is mainly to let the locals have a chance to own this type of cache in their region (ie, why would I be allowed to own a virtual or earth cache in the middle of the Sahara desert when I live in Val-Doucet New Brunswick, but then again some may argue why should I not be allowed. I bet with good argument you could change my mind and I could join the other side). All in all, I guess I am a bit neutral about the earthcaches. Same with Puzzles (as this seems to have been a hot subject lately). One day, I may get more interested in those, but for now, not so much.

  • I guess we all have cache types that we like and dislike. I don’t really like the power trails but by far the earthcache is my favorite. I have always looked at places that I like to explore. I also like historical cache locations. In an earthcache there is always something interesting. When I do earthcache locations I can generally them exciting where as when we do power trail I become bored very quickly. I can understand why some folks might not like the longer descriptions that generally come with earthcaches as it might slow one down. Some earthcaches have too many questions but most deal with only one or two. Some we have done in Quebec with long descriptions have caused problems because our french is poor and we often read the questions incorrectly. But for all types of caches just keep on placing them and there will always be someone that will find joy in finding them.

  • HI, talking about geology remind me a geology youth camp I did years ago called” retour au passé (back to the past)” where we visit fossil emplacement in NS, importants location as the Fort Beausejour near sackville and cavern… yes cavern.

I remember one of them near Hillsborough but I cant remember the road or the coords of it trail…The only thing I remember is inside that cavern there was a 15 footer passage call ”typhon” because you had to crawl to go trought and half of it height was filled with water…anyone know the coords?

    just let me know, thanks
