Geocaching injuries?

I was out in Irishtown Nature Park today hiding some caches for the local schools to go find as part of their outdoor activities, they are fake caches not listed so don’t get excited. I also took some time to do some maintenance on the ACGA caches there as well, as people keep taking the punches. While crossing the bridge on the Red trail where it goes over the lake, the chain on my bike started acting up and I looked down just as I was coming off of the bridge. That was all it took and the handle bar hit the side rail about 6 inches from the end of the bridge and I lost control and my balance. I went over the handle bars heading for the side of the trail which was about 3 feet from the edge of the lake. Thankfully there were a few small trees there to keep me from going in. I got up once I realized that I was not in the water and my GPS and BlackBerry were going to stay dry. There was a lady about 20 feet away and watched the whole comedy, she did stop to make sure I was ok, good thing she didn’t see the blood coming from my knee and elbow. I hopped on my bike and carried on, funny thing was I had my helmet on all morning until this short 200 meter ride when I decided I would just attach it to my back pack for the short trip, good thing I didn’t hit my head. Oh yeah, I landed on an ant nest, big black ones, I had about 100 on me by the time I got up and noticed them, brushed the last one off when I got back to my truck 20 minutes later.

So, any one else have some war stories? I remember at least 2 broken ankles happening in the last few years, there must be more.

  • I was with Jim52 when he took a bad fall and went nose first into a log. Lots of blood. To add salt to the wound, Jim had already foound this cache in the past and was coming in to help me find it,

  • I’ve had some cuts and bruises but nothing quite like that. I did hear that someone broke an ankle trying to do my wherigo cache at Centennial Park. Never found out who it was.

  • Beats anything we can talk about. But we can show you scratches and bruises like most cachers. We also got lung problems on our trip last month and I have lost two pairs of glasses and two hearing aids.

    Jim can tell uou about traffic tickets and car problems

  • Haven’t been caching as long as you’ve all been but my worst scratch happened at GCBBA. Lost my balance on a fallen tree. But it was NOTHING like you’ve went thru today. Sounds like it could had been so much worst.

    I have a “it only happens to me” story tho;

    I was caching in the Moncton area a few weeks ago and I parked on the side of the road. The fella that was with me went out to grab the cache but called for help. I wasn’t supposed to get out of the car since it was a quick grab. I got out so quick I forgot to pull the hand brake and I had the car in neutral O_o, stupid me. I only realized something was wrong when I look thru the trees after looging the find to see a long car lineup on the road and I couldn’t locate my car. Oh damn, the car was like 50 meters away from where we were, went across the road and someone stopped it before it felt in the ditch. Can I tell you I still feel stupid about that one… It was the cache near the golf park in Lakeville. There is so much traffic there that I’m surprised there was not a single scratch on the car. I was sure I would get fined for that incident but thank god the police had a good sense of humor.

    Zor, it was Scouter Scott who broke his ankle at the Wherigo, he still has problems with it, it was a bad break.

  • Barbed wire, or should I specify rusty barbed wire. There was a Paulansstacey cache in a cemetary in Point de Butte that sent me to my knees. Worst thing about it was that I didn’t even have to cross the fence. Then there was a cache on Zor’s story teller series that sent me a.. over tea kettle. Ma was along on that one so I didn’t look like a fool all by myself. Most recently while completing Hillbilly Bob’s series along the dykes in the Shepody/Hopewell Hill area, I spotted a barbed wire at chest level so I stretched it up and proceeded to go underneath. Well I should have thought that these fences come in two because I got caught at the ankle. When I came out Rose Maries asked if I had been stung by a insect. Just say yes and move on. Oh yeah always make sure that your tetanus shots are up too date.

    Still healing and trying to learn to slow down.
