NewsPa's Caching Tales

Caching news, including Gatineau & Syracuse

We left home about two weeks ago.  We first went to Ottawa area and we are now on our way down Interstate 81 to the Shenandoahs for a week of hiking next week in Virginia. Of course we have done a little geocaching.

Police encounter in Gatineau

While caching in a small woods in Gatineau we came upon a completely dismantled Yamaha scooter and a few other scooter parts as well as the license plate and ownership papers.  We brought the latter to the police station.  It turns out that the scooter was stolen 2 days before.  I wanted to give them the coords but apparently they have no gps units. They had an officer accompany us to the site.  When he noticed our NB license, he wondered what we were doing in those woods.  I had to explain all about geocaching.

Caching in Syracuse area

We did some caching in and around Syracuse NY.  There are a few nice caches but we have been really surprised that caches here are not winter friendly.  We have yet to find a small or regular hanging in a tree.  Most are on the ground under piles of loose branches. (reminds us of NB caches from a few years ago).  Even the micros in the woods are often low on the ground placed near the base of trees.  We were surprised to see that the last person to sign the log on a Pennsylvania cache was fwcole from NB.

Logic Micros in Quebec

We placed 6 new logic puzzles in Gatineau.  We call them Logic Micro. Like the previous 4, they are copies of some NB micro logics.  There is quite a competion  to solve them and log them.  I take great pleasure in looking at the stats on Geochecker which tells me that some of the cachers were checking their answers at 3 in the morning.  A few of the cachers have written programs that calculate the answers for them. They are quite open about their solving activities and one of them brags about how quickly he gets the answers. This seems to frustrate those who calculate manually.  The latter cachers are often proudly stating that they solved them manually.  One of our logic puzzles has appeared in Riviere du Loup QC. Shella of Taz30 copied one of our puzzles (with permission) and placed it on a bike trail.

Congrats to Jim52

Jim hit 11500 a few days ago.  He did it on a really interesting cache (anniversary challenge) from Tiger Tracker.

Thanks to Viking43 and Sandini

Last month these two cachers made a caching trip to our area. Even though they found many caches during the two days, many of the logs were not cut and paste.  They often went out of their way to compliment us on the caching location and the views and for showing them some of our coast line and rivers. A few logs thanked us for the pleasure they had during the trip.  We have done many caching trips and know how difficult it is to keep good records and provide good comments in our logs.  We sincerely appreciated the greats logs from those two cachers.  It makes hiding caches worthwhile. We also want to thank them for replacing a number of wet log sheets for us.

Here is an example of two of their logs

A pretty area and a perfect spot for a cache. Good choice. TFTC

  • On the subjecto of Micro Logic caches. I want to advise that we have 8 more of them done. The cache pages are ready, and all that is left is tohide the caches. We likely will wait till the fall to put them out. At that time there may be more than 8 ready. I am also trying to come up with a method to slow down the cachers who solve them with a program

  • I tried some of your Micro Logic just for fun to see if I stood a chance hehe. I managed to solve a couple but some out there really needs serious dedication I think. Is it possible that some puzzle will leave you with a couple possible solutions and the only way to really solve them is by elimination on the geochecker? I’m at this point on a puzzle.

Keep up the good work and the interesting stories.

  • All the micro logics were designed with only one solution, but it is possible that I am fallible. One or two micro logics could have more than one answer if you use 0 as the first digit of a 2 or 3 or 4 digit number. None of my numbers start with a 0.

If you have problems with a puzzle, I would be pleased to give advice or help

  • Allright, thanks for the heads up. I’ll try to rework it, I must have missed something. If I get stuck again I’ll use a “Lifeline”.
