NewsPa's Caching Tales

It’s All About The People

The most important part of geocaching is the people. It would not be the same if people were not willing to do things for others, like hiding caches, organizing events, etc. I am thinking of the winter challenge this year, the Fredericton Challenge, the seafood excursion, the Great Race in Moncton, etc. And I am thinking of the efforts of cachers who spend time and money preparing great caches for us. There have been some great quality caches out there lately.

When I think of caching people, I think of the group of us who get together for a meal at the Casino every Monday, or the crowd that assembles for breakfast at Moosers in Dieppe every month, or the large groups that attend events, like the one in Riverview yesterday.

When I think of caching people I think of the wonderful cachers that we go caching with. Over the past year we have gone out caching many times with Belladan on his days off. Lots of adventures. I think of the caching trips with Chignecto Duo. I think of meeting up with Jim52 on PEI a month ago to do some puzzles and do some CT caches. I think of travelling to the NS Spring Fling every year (one year we travelled with Chignecto Duo and another we went with Jim52 and Tharitiz). I think of our 5 day PEI caching trip last week when Belladan and Gerald of Chigneto Duo joined us for 2 days biking on the CT.

When I think of caching I think of the great caching stories and the really interesting logs. How can you not love the great logs from the Cookers or from Chatelaine. Belladan really loves logs and reading about caching adventures. He set up GC.com to give him all the logs within 50 kms from his place.

Here are a few interesting people items.

**A wedding proposal

Read this great log:

**Boy did it ever rain on November 11. Our only cache was a caching event. You gotta admire ZeMartelo and AJlong who went out and found over 60 caches in The Sackville area in the rain.

**We were over on PEI two weeks ago, right after the major snow storm. We bumped into two Fredericton Cachers biking the CT. It was cachescammer and Ken of Team-Newfie-Trio. They wanted to avoid the storm so had left fredericton at 2 am. They spent 4 days on PEI biking the trail and picking up a ton of caches. One day they cached till midnight in order to get 200 caches in one day. The most amazing thing about their story is that it was very cold that week, and those two crazy cachers were sleeping in their car. Ken may be leaving for Afghanistan in mid February, so we will try to schedule the Ice Walk for early February.

**We have done 3 trips to PEI since October. We got back on our bikes and did over 700 caches on the CT and many other caches too. It is all thanks to the great PEI cachers who spent the time to plan, prepare and place over 1400 caches on the CT. Like I said, it is all about the people.

**Caching is about the people. Here is an item posted by forest fauna on the ACGA thanking Jim Cyr and the ACGA for something special.

And one final point.
Cachers are great people. We may disagree with some of them sometimes, but when looking at the big picture, those differences are minor and we should concentrate more on the positive. This is just a game and is supposed to be fun. Lets get out and enjoy ourselves together.

  • You often say it Pa “It’s always about the people” To avoid talking to myself, sometimes I even bring Bella along although those conversations are often one sided.

    Well said Pa!!!

  • Yep, it’s all about the cachers. Even though this is a game of numbers sometimes, it’s not a game of cacher against cacher. It’s not something so competitive as to make enimies or rivals. It is a game where you meet new people on a reguler basis and even become friends sometimes.
I have now met most of the regular cachers and a few of the new ones. I have not met a cacher I didn’t like. Even Rev Slippery ( sorry Rev. I had to put that in there. I am sure it’s what Nemo or Paul would do. )
Either out on the trail or at events, these are some of the nicest people I have talked to, because we all share a similar interest. Finding that container in a tree.

  • The best thing was on one of the nights while we were sleeping in the car, Bill was in his and I was in mine with the bikes placed inbetween, was that at around 1am or so we both heard voices of people outside saying “I think there are people sleeping in those cars” They approached with glowsticks and thats when Bill sat right up and looked at them.. They screamed and yelled “THERE ARE PEOPLE SLEEPING IN THERE!” and ran away. It was awesome LOL

We had a great time meeting up with Ma & Pa on those days and its a trip I was remember always for sure =D

  • Last Friday’s “treat event” was another fine example that despite the Remembrance Day ceremonies and torrential downpour, many cachers both new and old, made it out to another great event!

Well said Pa…. very well said!

  • Regarding ‘its all about people’ I would like to add an observation from Chatelaine to fellow cachers at the Remembrance Day event … ‘amazing how we have different generations involved in this same game’ …. Pa, an exceptional post! Danke (^_^)

  • I like you too <3.

We've always enjoyed caching with you two, and look forward to doing so again. You know my thoughts on the matter, it's always been the people. Never numbers, never, ever puzzles, sometimes the trail but always the company.

  • Pa, you are so right.

Yesterday I was NOT having a good day. Driving back home I stopped at one of my cache, Nannochloropsis, only to find out it had been ruined. I was furious. Like we say in French, I guess that was what put the cherry on top of my sunday for that day.

That cache took me a bit of work and I was kinda proud of it (I am not a ‘’critter’’ yet, but I was looking forward to put out different caches out there). At first I must admit that I did not do a good job at making it ‘’though’’ but I re-arranged it after a few finds and it was then ‘’though’’. So to find it all ruined just turned me sooooo off. Especially since not that long ago I had to put another one of my favourite hides down, Gin Kom Son, because of ruthless geocachers. I know for Gin Kom Son that it was geocachers as the owner of the building, who in the first place though it was so cool, asked me to remove it as some geocachers were trying to unscrew, kicked and hit the gas line on the side of the building. Of course when I heard that I just ‘’cleaned’’ the spot and archived the cache.

All in all, I was quite P off.

But, I got all kinds of emails after posting just a one liner on the scribble, from cachers that were very concerned and were asking for more info on what happened and so forth. There is a cacher that also tweeted me a joke about it. All this ‘’friendship’’ approach made me turned my mood into a more warm and fussy one.

So you are right; It’s all about the People!

    🙂

    • Nemo, your hides are some of the most clever out there. Between your caches and Critter431’s, there are some great caches out there that have inspired me and I hope to be able to copy your style (without copying the actual cache ideas) when I put out some hides. I have a few good ideas up my sleeve and one really cool cache container built, I just need to take the time to find appropriate hiding spots and create the listings.

Anyway, I understand your frustration and would have felt the same way had it happened to me. Glad to hear you’re getting the warm and fuzzies back.

I recall going to a Beer & Nachos event 4 years ago. Opus Terra from Quebec and also Sunnygirls from Quebec attended the event. It was a pleasure meeting them. We met them all again at events in Quebec City area.

Opus Terra is now number 1 in Canada. Being # 1 did not affect him at all. He and his wife Micheline are wonderful people who give a lot to the caching community. At the MEGA event in Quebec, he was the one who gave the GSAK presentation.

In april 2010 we attended an event in the Sherbrooke QC area celebrating their 15000 th cache (They now are approaching 25000) The tributes and affection shown at that event were truly amazing.

On Saturday we were pulling the rest of the veggies from our garden, when a car pulls into our laneway, Out pops Spidey 86 who had spent the day doing caches in ou area and he was stopping by to pick up the cache at our place. We had a great caching chat. A really nice young man who enjoys this new hobby.

On October 15, more than a dozen cachers and their families met on a dirt road in the Sackville area to watch Heavy Metals climb up a pole to get a cache. It was fantastic to see so many pople show up impromptu for this. Here is the log by the Cookers who put this thing together,

  • It’s all about the people.

What a fantastic turnout for the event in Moncton. The room was packed. Lots of stories and lots of smiles.

  • I will soon be writing an item called

    ITS ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS

But first just a short note ALL ABOUT PEOPLE

Met up with PastorJim last week in Irishtown Park while doing Argus’ new caches in Irishtown Park

Saturday we met up with Mr Chignecto Duo and went caching around Salisbury and Petitcodiac together.

Saturday I met 6 other cachers and played poker (Also referred to as: making a donation)

Sunday we went to Breakfast event with Belladan and had great caching chat with some old friends and new friends and also met some of the newer cachers from this area.

Sunday after the event we went over to Tiger Tracker’s place where we got a short informative lesson on the new GSAK

Today we went to Casino for lunch and met up with Jim52, Tharitiz and Belladan. Lots of caching chat and GSAK stuff and exchange of info. We then went with Belladan to get the No Power cache at Pastor Jim’s place.

Tomorrow Belladan and Mr Chignecto Duo will be out together in the Bouctouche area placing a bunch of caches on a trail.

  • Caching is a great hobby for retired people cause they have lots of time on their hands.
Yesterday I was at COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had an elephant? So because I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle’s ass and a car hit me.

Better watch what you ask retired people.

  • How about this as a motto in life.

I think I will adopt it.

“Life is too short for drama and petty things, so kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly.” ~ Susan Chapman Melanson
