Need Help with Oregon 450

You all know how I hate to get new stuff because I hate the learning curve.

Well I broke down and got an Oregon 450. Well there certainly is a learning curve.

Today we went caching with it.  We found 4 caches and even managed to mark as found. Now we are home and want to delete the found caches out of the gps. We cant find anything in the literature or on the device that helps us do it.

Plug the gps into your computer
    Go to “my computer”
Find a blue triangle symbol marked Garmin, and click on it
    Open the file entitled Garmin
Find the file “GPX” and click on it
Right click on the GC code you want to delete and a window will come up to allow you to delete the file
    Clear as mud???? Good luck.

    • Thanks critter.

      We will try that.

I wish there was a way to do it right on the GPS like with our Legend.

This method reminds me of our magellan which i threw away

  • Well I tried.

Everytime we clicked on a gpx file , it opened GSAK.

Anyhow, there was no identification of found geocaches and not found. I deleted a file and they all disappeared off the gps. But I only wanted to delete the found caches.

I don’t think you can delete just the found caches. Once they are marked “found”, they do not bother anything other than take up a bit of space in your memory. I delete everything once in a while just to make room for more caches.Did you go to the Garmin site, and download the owners manual for your GPS? That will help quite a bit. I had trouble with the drivers to make the GPS compatable with my computer, but did manage to figure it out. It sounds to me like you are having the same problem. If all else fails, come to “View of the Sewage lagoon” in Sackville, that’s where I am….

Pa, I heard you needed help with the 450! To delete caches
from the GPX it really depends how you put them there in the first
place. – If you transfered them directly from GC or used “SEND TO
GPS” in GSAK then in the folder GPX in the garmin ICON all you have
to do is ‘CLICK’ in each individually file with the GC name and
either press DEL or right click with the mouse and choose the
option to DELETE and then all you do is to confirm. If you used the
EXPORT function in GSAK (or used the excellent macro GARMINEXPORT
or if just copied a POCKET QUERY in the GPX folder you need to look
for a file in the GPX folder called Caches or with the same name as
the pocket query and delete it.

  • Thanks

We have the user manual on the computer and will have to read more of it I guess. WE sent the caches with Send to GPS using GSAK. When we went to garmin file, and then GPX and clicked, it opened up in GSAK. Do we delete the files from GSAK, and will it delete those files from the gps or do i have to reload from GAK again to override what is in the GPS.

GEEZ, the Legend does all this right on the gps, no need to use the PC.

One more silly question, it seems we can do our logs using field notes, We will have to try that. If we log our found caches using field notes on one day, and then find more caches and try using field notes again, will it only bring up the new found caches?

  • Ok, couple of things. First off, you can’t use the GPS to delete found caches. If you’re sending them from GSAK, then the “geocaches.gpx” file on your GPS contains everything, including your finds. What I do is delete the GPX file and resend it from GSAK with my find filtered in GSAK.

Field notes are automatic. As long as you are marking the cache as “found” and then moving on to another one, the notes file gets updated automatically even if you don’t add a comment. That means that whether or not you are anything to your FN, the file will always have your finds on it. Just upload it to GC and make changes to the log and submit. Makes logging far easier.

I will be covering some if the questions that you have in my GSAK event on Jan, 15. This will include using fieldnotes and updating your GPS with GSAK.

Definitely a learning curve for the Oregon 450… but I prefer it greatly to my old Legend! (It’s NOT a Legend H, it’s the really old version that doesn’t plug into the computer…).

On that note… does anybody have an old GPS (that DOES plug into the computer) they’d be willing to sell? My brother’s interested in taking up the sport, but doesn’t really want to invest in a brand new GPS.

I have a Magellan 210 that I not longer use since getting an Oregon 550. My daughter, Treehugger21 previously had one so she could give you some info on the specs.

I found the biggest disappointment with the Oregon 450 was not being able to just delete the found caches directly in the GPS.

the delete function is not something i ever used, even with my old GPS, so i dont really miss it. the 450 is all about the field notes for me.

Pa, to answer your question about field notes. There are a few different ways to do it. When you clear and reload your GPS, you can also erase your geocache_visits file to remove all those other found logs, which will clear it for next time you want to load your field notes (show only new ones). The other way, is during the upload, to use the box that says ‘ignore logs before…’.

If you cache for 4 days in a row, and dont get to log your field notes until you get home on the 5th day, you can upload them all at the same time, and it will have the correct date associated to all of your cache finds.
