News January 17 –Dieppe Muggle

UPDATE JANUARY 19. —AMENDED THE TITLE TO REFLECT THE POPULAR ITEM

I have a bunch of items that I wanted to mention but was not sure what title to use. So I will simply call it News.

    GSAK Event

So you want to have an event that will feature GSAK but GC.com wont let you use the name of another business in the title. So what do you do?

Well Team BikeFast found a wonderful answer.
They called their event Geocaching Swift And Keen event #2. The event is this Saturday in Quispamsis and will last 3 hours. We will be there.

    Nasty Muggle in Dieppe

Tiger Tracker and Treehugger placed some new caches on the ATV trails in Dieppe. A muggle claims that it is his father’s property and has removed a bunch of them. It seems that he has no problems with ATV’s on the land but has a problem with small containers hanging in the woods a few feet from the trail. HeavyMetals and Spidey86 met this person and reported the problem. A number of the caches have now been archived.

Here is a log from HeavyMetals on one of the caches.

On the way back, met up with a guy with a small rifle, said he was hunting rabbit. Said his dad owns a bunch of the land on the west side of the trail. Said he took out 5 caches because they were on his property, though it wasn’t clear if this was today or part of a past series of caches.. He talked so much I didn’t have a chance to say anything. Friendly enough though. Said if people are going to geocache in this area they should probably wear orange just to be seen both by hunters and 4-wheelers, he almost got hit by some skidoos that lost control on an icy corner once… He also said that rabbit season is until end of Feb and then coyote season starts.

Anyway, future cachers on this trail, maybe wear orange and be aware some caches may have been muggled. Will email the cache owner directly in case he doesn’t read this log.

And here is the archive log from Tiger tracker

Today I checked out the 10 caches that Treehugger21 and I had placed on this trail as part of the Winter Challenge and 5 were missing and 3 more muggled. From the information that I was able to gather, it seems that there is a person in the area that is up to no good so as a result, I feel that I have no choice but to archive my caches. Zor’s new cache at the end of the trail was also missing. I also have a puzzle challenge cache near the beginning of the trail that I disabled and removed but I intend on finding a new location for it. On a final note, I found 4 buckets about 50 meters from my first cache set up in small clearings in the woods which I can only presume belongs to the local muggle.

    Looney’s Lesser Known

Belladan has a nice series of 18 caches along Beaubassin Road. That road is 4 kms long and runs parallel to highway 11, starting at exit 2. The series brings back lots of memories, as it is dedicated the the lesser know cartoon characters in Warner Bros’s Looney Toons and Merry Melodies cartoons.

Many have done the series by car but Ma and I are doing it on foot one cache at a time. We park at the mailbox and walk the 3 kms to the end of the road and then return, picking up just one cache along the way. Our purpose is to get some exercise and also keep our new streak going. We are on day 10 of our new streak. Our old streak ended on December 29 in Florida at 275 days.

    Cold Weather Geocaching

The cold weather arrived lately and we are determined to keep caching. Sunday we went out in the bitter cold to pick up Jim52’s new Snow Ball caches and the multi and 5 puzzles that he placed on a trail in Dieppe. There were 7 of us: Ma & Pa; Chignecto Duo; Belladan with Rose Marie; and globuf. We were all dressed for the weather and had a great time hiking for 2 hours picking up the 13 caches on the trail. I was dressed so well that I started to sweat and had to take off some of my items.

Incidentally globuf has only been caching for 4 months and has more than 400 caches found. She is a friend of ours, and I must report that she is addicted. She has done a few series on the back of her friend’s ATV. It seems she lead him to places an ATV should not go and he had to go to emergency when he tangled with a branch or two.

Monday is Seniors day at the Casino so we headed there for an early cheap breakfast but we also wanted to get some caches so we headed up past Irishtown to get 3 of the new caches in a series placed by cableguy. The wind chill was minus 30 on Monday morning but Ma and I spent over an hour walking to the 3 caches. No vehicles had used the section of trail so we had to work a little harder to get to the caches. A long walk on a cold sunny day is really invigorating. Later on we headed back to the Casino for a cheap lunch and met up with Jim52. We used the funds given to us by the Casino and came away with $10. Jim took home more than that. So far Ma and I have taken home $740 using only the funds that they give us to play with.

Today we spent over an hour walking to one of the Looney caches.

ICE WALK

We have been watching the ice at our place in the hope that we will have good news for the Ice Walk. This cold spell raises our hopes. Today we saw a fisherman out on the bay on an ATV but it is still too soon to make a decision about crossing the ice.

If the ice is OK we will head across and maintain all the caches, no matter who they belong to. We dont plan on placing any new ones. If they have the time, Belladan and Chignecto Duo (Mr) will come and help. We hope to be able to do both islands.

In addition to the caches on the islands, there are a large number of new caches around, including the Looney Toon caches, Misha’s new caches on Cove Road, the new series by Belladan near Bouctouche, and we will be adding some new caches to our SM series near Shediac. In addition to the series, there have been a number of caches place nearby by Nicandash.

So far there are quite a few cachers from out of town who have logged a Will Attend, Including some from NS and QC.

    SM Series

Many of you have done our SM series of 29 caches which winds its way through the wilderness between Shediac and Malakoff. It is possible to do the first 10 caches by vehicle as they are on Pellerin road. The rest of the series is usually done on foot or snowshoe or bicycle, and involves mud holes and bushwacking. Today I was really amazed to read the logs from Greybeast who came down here to cache and actually drove the entire series in his KIA SUV. The logs indicate that he had to do a lot of tree trimming etc, to accomplish his task. Really Amazing.

  • regarding “Nasty Muggle in Dieppe” That sucks for Tiger’s caches for sure. I had a look at the Dieppe ATV website for their official trails and the caches don’t appear to follow any of their published trails from their trail map. Also had a look on Geonb and the caches appear to be spread across several parcels of land. Think I would have been asking for the “Fathers” name. I suspect a the land ownership claim may not have been entirely accurate.

  • From the information that I have been able to gather, the muggle is someone in his 30’s, not some kid. When placing caches, I also watch out for “No Trespassing” signs and I did not see any. I had plans to add another 15-20 caches along these trails by now I feel that this is no longer an option. I am not an ATVer but I did look for trail maps and did not find any detailed ones for this area. There are however plenty of tracks so these trails are being used on a regular basis.

  • Tiger told me about his plan for that bunch of trails and I was really happy about it. Sad to see now that it may not happened. Tiger, Do you think it’s the fellow we met when I was there? Perhaps just wait a bit until he forgets about it and go back later? I dunno. I guess winter is not helping with the obvious geotrails.

  • I don’t think that it is the same person but I cannot say for certain. HeavyMetals met the guy and I have the person’s name (his initials are L. G.). From the description that I received, this guy seems to like causing trouble for no good reason.

Hi Tiger, the 4 buckets you mentioned, were they white 5 gallon buckets by any chance?

You may have stumbled upon an area used for a small grow op and that guy didn’t want too many people in the area. HeyWhereAmI, UnrulyCanuck and I have stumbled on a few in the Fredericton area.

Just so everyone knows, if you do stumble on one you can send the RCMP the coordinates and a description of what you found and they will check the area out.

  • There are more trails used by ATVs and others then there are official ATV trails. Why, because official trails require written landowner consent. When the consent is received and the trail becomes official, the ATV Federation’s insurance policy covers any liability for the landowner in case of an ATV accident. Many landowners don’t wanna be bothered or commit to the process of granting permission.

These approved trails may appear on a clubs website but might not be up to date. Generally, any trail that is marked with signs indicating an ATV trail with a number is an approved ATV trail. Otherwise it’s not approved, usage is at your own risk.

As to the fact the trails are cutting across several parcels of land, if the guys father owned land on one side, he would also own the other side of the trail. Hence my suspicion the claim his father was the landowner may have been bogus.

That the person was protecting his grow op area makes a lot of sense and pulling the caches was the best course of action. However if you have a coordinates for the area, send them to the RCMP, they will check into it in growing season.

    • STYK would I be correct to assume that if I’m not a member of a club and or do not have the right to ATV on a trail I also don’t have the right to be on that trail? I know this has been an issue with land owners who allow Snowmobile federations to have access to their lands. They only want registered snowmobiles and no truck, ATVs or horseback ridding as it can damage their land…
