    Ice Walk

We provided an update on the cache page.

Here is the text of the update

JANUARY 19
Things are looking good.
It has been really cold lately and we have seen fishermen out on the bay on ATVs and a neighbour reported seeing a car out on the bay a few days ago. There are a dozen fishing shacks on the ice at Edgewater and the ice looks solid, however, there is no snow on the ice so the crossing would be very icy.
The weather forecast shows lots more very cold wether, so the ice will likely be thick enough. A bit of snow would help for better traction. In any event, we will continue monitoring and we will venture across before the event.

    Leap Day Souvenir

Many cachers are attempting to fill their calendars and most of them need a cache on February 29. So Leap Day should be a very busy caching day. On a personal note, we have 7 more days left to fill, the last day being Leap Day. Groundspeak has decided to recognize this occasion by issuing a Leap Day souvenir to anyone who finds a cache or attends an event on that day. Here is the info:

    Streak Continues

We are still going out every day, trying to get some exercise in doing that. Wednesday we hiked to 3 of cableguys caches on a trail above Irishtown. Thursday we walked 6 kms on Beaubassin Road picking up another one of Looney Toon caches. It was cold on the road with the wind blowing but we survived the 90 minutes out there. We met AL45 and Rusty who were out doing this great series today and had a nice chat. They said they had a DNF which is apparently a magnetic nano in a maple. MA thought it would be a good challenge, so we later tried to find the cache, but had no luck after a 20 minute search. The most embarassing thing about the DNF is that our friend globuf sent us an email telling us how proud she was to have found this tough cache a few days ago.

    Florida Trip

When we were caching in Florida last month, we found it strange to find business cards in some caches that advertised a caching supply store and a cache at the store. We never had a chance to go to the advertised cache, but after logging our caches online, we got an email from the cache owner inviting us to find the cache and to visit their store.

Here is a picture of the actual cache. Click on it to get it larger.

Here is a link to the very interesting containers that are available at the store. Also check out the Travel Tag coins that they have available

  • Pa, I think I know which Nano you are referring to. 3 of us looked for about 10 minutes and Spidey86 had looked before us and gave up. We found it about 10 meters away from where all the footprints and our GPS brought us. It was cold and all 4 of us tried but could not get the log out, actually we left Spidey there and he was still trying to get it out without damaging it. You don’t have to leave the road to find that one.

    • We went again today and had the pleasure of bumping into Chignecto Duo. We all had no luck but we finally found the nail. we searched on the ground without luck.

Belladan checked it out later and confirmed it was missing and replaced it with a micro.

  • Twas a pleasure meeting you on the trail too. We had a full day and then ran into that terrible accident on Main Street on our way home. By the the time we made all of our stops the roads were getting slippery.
It was funny today searching for the missing nano. The GPS put us in one spot, but no, we followed the tracks all through the area. We pay $$$$ for the technology, then like hounds follow the trail. Recheck the GPS, well it says # of feet away, slowly move in that direction, then follow the foot prints in the snow again.

  • Speaking of leap years, I placed a cache you will only be able to log if you logged a find on Feb 29th.

It should be published any time now.

    • They did, but Challenge Caches (which require finding caches that meet a set of requirements) are still allowed. Like finding a cache on every day of the calendar, or for all D/T combos, or 50 days in a row, etc.

  • JANUARY 23
Pa and Belladan went over to Shediac Island today and checked the condition of 20 of the cches. They are all good to go. We crossed from Edgewater because it is a shorter crossing but it still took us 5 hours to check the caches. We found the ice to be solid. There were skidoos and ATV’s on the ice. There was a thin layer of snow making the crossing relatively easy. .

  • So here’s my problem… Last year the ice was not frozen enough for me to go over and I still have four caches on the east side of the island that I don’t have. So for sure, I want to get those this year. BUT…

I’m in Portland, OR next week for work and I take the redeye back to Moncton on Friday night leaving Portland at 11:30pm getting into Moncton around 10:30am on Saturday morning.

I SO want to go to the event and snag those caches but it’s hard to say whether or not I’ll be in any shape for hiking all that ice after having been on a plane overnight. But I REALLY want to cross those caches off my list.

The things we do for caching…

    • Likely will take nearly 6 hours to get all the caches. If you get tired, stop and come back.. Zor can tell you about that.
