Come Out & Play 2012-2013 – Finally!

After unforeseen delays and numerous re-writes we’re thrilled to finally be able to launch the 2012-2013 Come Out & Play contest. It will officially begin on December 2nd and run through to March 31st, 2013 but you may have a sneak peek now to plan your attack! We’ll be having launch events in several cities on either Dec 1st or 2nd so check out the one closest to you!

For those who are not familiar with it or who are new to caching, COAP is a contest to get folks out caching during the chilly months of winter. It’s a province wide contest and everyone in NB is eligible to play. The object is to complete at least 20 of the 44 tasks during the contest period.

There are quite a few changes this year, all high-lighted in yellow on the rules and tasks sheets. We’ve tried to change it up some and keep it fun and interesting for you. One of the major changes is that you may complete as many of the tasks as you wish and your 20 best scores will give you your total. The other major change is that all hide tasks no longer have time restraints; they may be completed over the duration of the contest. We’ve also made all scores eligible for positive or negative points.

The English version of the rules and tasks can be found here and the French here. If you have any questions or want clarification on something please send us an email at milosheart@gmail.com.

For easy access to all COAP information, registration and submission of completed tasks please click on the COAP banner near the top of the page.

As usual, a huge shout out to the guys here at Cache Up NB for their continued support and tech work! They have made our work much easier this year and we really appreciate all they’ve done to host this contest. We couldn’t do it without them. Thank you!! 🙂

We hope you’ll Come Out & Play!

milosheart

We're milosheart, also known as Gwen & Terry LeBlanc. We're from Fredericton and have been involved with geocaching since March 2008. When we started caching we each had our own accounts/names. He was Frogger57 and I was milosheart. milo is a nickname of Terry's (from a song he messed up the words to) and, well, I'm his heart (we're still on our honeymoon, 6 yrs on). He logged his first 19 caches then gave up. He loves to go caching, loves the driving, travelling, meeting fellow cachers, searching and finding but could care less about the logging, planning, numbers, etc. He doesn't know how to use the GPS and has no desire to learn, doesn't have a clue what GSAK is, nor care. I love him more for just going with me, blindly sometimes! LOL So we just continued on using my original account and became team milosheart. We cache here in Freddy Beach, Moncton (Terry's hometown), Saint John (my sister and fellow cacher, eebee, lives there) and just about anywhere else we go. Yes, we are addicted. Happily.

  • Well done Milosheart…. One question…. I think this is saying you can only go high or low… So, no zero totals…

    • Ken, there will prizes for highest, lowest and closest to average, as usual. I don’t see why we can’t have a closest to zero one as well, with a draw from any and all who tie at zero points.

  • Hmmm, if I use this cache here I get this many points …. then again if I combine it over there I get more points ….. time for the spreadsheets 🙂

    • Yup, I goofed.

Announcements say it starts Dec 2nd and Rules/Tasks say Dec 1st. I missed the 2 different dates in all the confusion of getting it up and running.

Officially, it does start Dec 2nd but we’ll accept any tasks done and dated from Dec 1st. You can’t register yet, possibly later today and tomorrow for sure.

      Sorry for the confusion!!

      • Registration and claim submission will ABSOLUTELY be available by tomorrow morning.

To those attending the COAP Shippagan event, feel free to check back here tonite as the system might be installed by then. No guarantees. It will be active by 9am tomorrow regardless.

  • A quick question, Milosheart – for Task 44 (You’ll really hate us now), it says that none of those caches can be claimed as a different task. For task 21, we’re to find two caches a day for 7 days. So, if we’re planning to do both, do we need to find at least 3 caches a day for those 7 days, or just 2? Just making sure – I read it as 3 a day for the week.

  • You read it correctly, in your scenario you would need to find 3 for those 7 days. 🙂 Hate us now?? LOL

  • With regards to Task 44. Do you want us to submit our caches every 14 days for this or should we just keep a long list of those in order to subimit them on the last day?

    • Since there is no place to keep track of them all, the best way would probably be to keep a list and submit it in the “notes” section on the claim at the end of the contest. Enter the first one or two in the spaces provided and list the rest. If, for some reason that won’t work we’ll probably just have you email the list. We’ll figure it out if it becomes an issue but nobody will be penalized if there is one. 🙂

      • Awesome! I’ll keep a list of them in an excel spreadsheet and submit all of them at the end of the contest for this task. Thanks!

      • Also I assume this would also apply to task 42 since this task specifies over the period of the contest. I would keep a list of the ABC ones and submit them once they are all complete or at the end of the contest.

        • Yes, it would apply to task #42 as well. However, the majority of people so far, have discovered this series of caches (GC1V376) that makes the task very easy. Unless, of course, you’ve already found them. 🙂

  • Registration and claim submission forms are now LIVE!

If you have an issue with the system, please let us know. Thanks

    • Hi AutisticMajor,

Near the top of the home page, just below the Twitter feed, there is a banner that says “New Brunswick 2012-2013 Come Out & Play Contest – click here for more information”. Click on it and it will take you to where you need to be. 🙂

  • Just a reminder to be careful when you’re entering your GC codes for task submissions. So far, I’ve had over 25 submissions with non-existent or incorrect codes, mostly due to typos.

  • At the launch event, someone mentioned an excel spreadsheet. Is this something that is/will be available?

    • NightOwl74, the new format for submitting tasks and tracking your scores makes the spreadsheet unnecessary compared to previous years so we are not providing one.

We did, however, post last year’s spreadsheet on the Fredericton Facebook group for those who wanted a spreadsheet to plan their attack with, as requested. I believe Tabitha Godin re-did it with the current tasks.

But, I do want to make it very clear that you use it (or any other) at your own risk. Since we (COAP) are not providing an official spreadsheet this year, any that you use, create or share are not our responsibility. Any scoring discrepancies, incorrect task information or other errors are the responsibility of the player(s).

      Hope that helps. 🙂

      Gwen

  • A quick question regarding task 3 (Bug Off). Can we launch our TB in a cache that we previously found or does it have to be launched in a cache that we have not found before?

    • NightOwl74, you may use a previously found cache to launch your TB. The task says “Launch a brand new TB in the cache of your choice”, so go ahead. Don’t forget to include the name and number in the notes section of the claim. 🙂

  • For the Convert a Muggle task the person we convert has to have at least 20 finds by the end of the contest and they have to sign up during the period of the contest. This is straight forward but if I am to go out with my muggle friend on a series of 20 caches in one day for the Seriously Task (I think) do these 20 caches only apply to 1 task or can we use these caches that we find together as these two tasks combined? I assume we can just use the 20 caches for the Seriously task and then just reference the muggle’s new profile for the Convert a Muggle cache (and not have to reference all the geocaches that they have found).

    • bentnt, you may claim the 20 caches in your example for the Seriesly task, as may your muggle. You may not use one of the 20 for the Convert a Muggle task, you need to find one extra for that. Hope that answers your question. 🙂

  • Just a question about Task #39, Lighthouse cache. GC3HTTM does not use the word “lighthouse” but whaft light and is a lighthouse from what I can tell, I think haha. Would it work for that task? Thanks!
